Why Papo & Yo Should Be Game of the Year

Kotaku - Papo & Yo did something that too few games manage to do: it let me step into the life of another, actual-living-breathing person. And once I did that, I played through an experience that showed me how that person got through a painful relationship and was left with a lesson that I too could pick and use if I needed it.

Kotoku being stupid as usual. They dont relies GOTY is an opinion so it can be any game. Some people GOTY is Mark of the Ninja while others are Journey. There is no official GOTY.

WeAreLegion4128d ago

Yes, there is. It's Uncharted 2. It has won GOTY every year since 2009.

I was looking forward to the game for a good while but I found it had a few too many issues. Heck one of the puzzles was broken for me at the time and I haven't gone back to it since.

You more than likely were doing the puzzle wrong. This is a game that takes a lot of skill.

None of the puzzles I played were at all broken, and the game can be completed. In fact you don't really have to think very hard to complete them, but just like the entire game, they are just pleasant to complete.

I would recommend going back and trying again because it's worth seeing through to the end, even if you need to use a walkthrough.

@ Killzoner99, I don't believe the game requires a whole lot of skill, but I guess everyone is different.

Simply breathtaking game. You will never find an experience like it anywhere but the PS3.
Long Live Play

One of the best games of 2012. Definitely a narrative masterpiece. It is something that I recommend to ANY gamer out there with a heart and/or imagination.

The game is lovely. Its puzzles are not incredibly challenging or sophisticated, but it's highly original, expressive, wacky and whimsical. The music is unique, original and marries the rest of the game to perfection. The background to the story and characters is actually quite mature and satisfying, despite its childish and fun-looking exterior. The visuals, much like The Unfinished Swan and Journey, are excellent. That's my best description of one of the finest examples of a modern indie game.

How Papo & Yo Helped Me Deal With My Childhood & Grow

PSLS: "Five years ago indie studio Minority Media released Papo & Yo on the PlayStation Store. The 3D puzzle-platformer features contrasting settings of a fantasy world where monsters exist and the broken down favelas of Brazil. As the player continues solving block puzzles and attempting to keep their friendly beast of a partner away from the frogs that enrage him, they start to learn that this isn’t a story of fantasy, but of a young boy trying to find an escape from an alcoholic and abusive father."

This game and it's meaning are very deep. If you know the developers story and depending on your own childhood playing this game can be a healing or scar opening experience.

It's great that this excellent game helped you grow. I never had to deal with the things this game portrays in my home, but one a dead on analogy for one of my friends and his Dad. It was scary when he'd come home drunk at 1 or so in the morning. The guy I talked to at dinner with the nice smile and kind eyes was gone replaced by a beast of a man who was willing to scream at and hit his family for apparently no reason.

I find it odd that videogames as a medium are so disregarded as an art form/medium that can convey powerful messages. I almost feel like movies lately have lost that touch because they are just being churned out to be churned out. Meanwhile, there seems to be more videogames that have made made me go through a broad range of emotions and sometimes connect with in game characters on a more personal level. I also love how music and sounds in videogames has come so far to become very effective for setting moods and eliciting feelings as well.

Games and Alzheimer’s: It’s Complicated

While dementia and Alzheimer’s impact the lives of millions, it’s a relatively rare subject in the escapist fantasy worlds of video games. Not surprising. Who wants to be reminded of a disease that has no known cure and that robs people of their memories and identities?
