Greatest video game music and character themes - SergeantMerrell

"Character musical themes in today’s games are somewhat of an anachronism. Gone are the days of 8- and 16-bit video game music arrays that severely limited a composer’s ability to convey emotion – modern games have full symphonic capability, and very little in the way of physical limitations beyond the imagination of the composer. In short, it used to be a lot harder to show the player what they were supposed to be feeling.

Musical themes were a great way to give a character a characteristic identifier so that players could tell, even with their eyes closed, who was on the scene, and what that meant to the story." (Retro, Super Mario)
