Sony Advises Against Microwaving Your PS3

Edwin Kee:

I don’t know about you, but this is definitely a no-brainer – you should not put another piece of consumer electronics into a microwave to dry it. Unfortunately, there must have been some folks around the world who has done so, considering how Sony went about recently to make a public announcement that you should not put your PS3 console in the microwave. I am at a complete loss for words to hear that from Sony, how about you?

Sony did so based on the evidence of some PS3s which were sent back to Sony for repair, saying, “Of the defective products received by Sony, we have detected on some rare occasions evident changes in the shape of the unit and even burn marks that can only be assumed to have been brought about by the use of an electrical appliance such as a hairdryer or microwave. Heating up your game console leads not only to a defective unit but also creates the risk of a fire or even serious injury”.

Speechless, dudes, totally speechless. (PS3, Sony)

they`re probably got a PS3 that had been repaired with a heat gun to reflow the board and something went bad for the customer, hence why he sended it to sony.

But yeah, Microwaving your PS3 I not really the smartest thing to do

and yet people still put their HS modem from their provider in the dish washer to clean it, and also were responsible for their dish washer as the modem welded to the top of the dish washer and broke it...

Every time I hear things like this, I am reminded of that movie by Mike Judge Idiocracy...

Actually for a long time people have been using microwaves / ovens / inducing overheating generally as a means of 'fixing' (often only fixes for a few months / weeks) ylod / rrod.

It often works for a while as the solder melts. That said I'm not actually sure how well this works in a microwave. Most people seem to use ovens.

I'd say that'd be commonsense, but you never know nowadays..

"burn marks that can only be assumed to have been brought about by the use of an electrical appliance such as a hairdryer or microwave"

yep, i melted the back of my old 40gb phat using the hair dryer technique, and got all my saves onto a thumb drive after doing so.. handy trick for the YLOD

its moments like this that makes me really believe that some people are still not fully human yet. (92% human) (8% monkey)

how? how can ones brain be so oblivious to the fact that electronics cannot be MOTHER-FN MICROWAVED!

pixelsword  +   1136d ago
@ Ezz:

No.

It's a grill, not a microwave; and certainly not microwavable.

but will it blend?

I'm so glad I read this because I play my PS3 outside in the rain quite a bit and I was about to pop it into the Microwave to dry it cos I can't wait till it gets dry.
Now because of this warming from SONY, I'll pop it into the tumble dryer instead. Grateful.

Some people simply amaze me. No electronic pieces should be put on a microwave. Someone with enough gray matter should know this.

Watch the movie Idiocracy and see if it doesn't creep you out a little. We're heading in that direction.

It certainly can, there is no longer enough natural selection to weed out the idiots so they just keep reproducing. Sure we have the Darwin Awards contestants but that's just a drop in a sea of idiots.

Plus technology is leading to a society that relies on the internet for everything, why bother remembering anything when you can just look it up? On the upside it makes winning at trivia rather trivial since everyone else is an idiot.

I just wanted to bring some christmas warmth to my PS3. This warning needs to be on the actual PS3, so I didn't forget this next time. I also need to be reminded that Dualshock is affected by Newton's laws of motion, so that I don't forget and throw them on the wall. Or leave them in mid-air.
rainslacker  +   1136d ago
It truly is a shame that most homes don't come with real wood burning fireplaces anymore.:)
BlmThug  +   1136d ago
One does wonder just how stupid one has to be to in order to microwave an electronic item
ZigZagZach  +   1136d ago
Oh thank God they told me was just about to go ahead and microwave it!

You guys are all idiots. The PS3 IS a microwave. How do you think I've survived in the jungle for 3 years??

/s
Hallow  +   1136d ago
About time they put out a warning! More companies should do this, just last week I was playing my Fender Strat in the shower and was electrocuted. I am filing a law suit, they put shower warnings on hair dryers so why not guitars?
rainslacker  +   1136d ago
Sadly in today's society with everyone able to sue over anything, you may not be far off.

Damn. Fortunately I have:

Oven
Grill
Waffle Iron
zekk  +   1135d ago
What? no deep frier?
Ares90  +   1135d ago
oh yes, my bad.
Mister_G  +   1135d ago
Yeah, it's probably people trying the hair dryer trick on a YLOD'd machine. Maybe people without a suitable hair dryer thought a microwave would work(?).

BBC Watchdog program showed PS3s been repaired in a special oven, but stripped down to the motherboard of course, maybe people just remember the "fix with an oven" part.

You gotta laugh tho :)
chukamachine  +   1135d ago
MS advises you to put 360 in microwave.

Microwaves sell out.

I did the towel and hairdryer trick for a friends 360, but never a microwave.
