Master Chief and Mario are decidedly Microsoft and Nintendo’s respective “mascots” for their consoles. They’re both distinctive, have mass appeal, and I think we can all agree they’re just pretty awesome. What’s Sony’s answer?
I don't think it will be anyone that we are currently playing in existing games. Every console generation for Sony has brought a new wave of IP's and the best and most recognisable of those IP's over time become the "face of Playstation" PS1 had "Crash Bandicoot" and "Solid Snake" PS2 had "Ratchet and Clank", "Jak" and "GTA" to an extent PS3 has had "Sackboy", "Nathan Drake" and "Kratos" this gen. Although GTA and Kratos break my "never played before" point, generally speaking, Sony's mascots have been the faces of the generations new IP's and stand-out games. If it should be anyone we already know and carry over to the next generation for brand recognition im thinking carry over Sackboy and/or Drake. Uncharted is synonymous with mindblowing set pieces, beautiful attention to detail and industry defining production values, so you can't really go wrong having that in peoples heads when pushing new hardware. But as with this gen too, Sackboy reaches to both kids and adults who are really children at heart too (me included, can't help but love Sackboy and i'm 23...) so Sackboy ticks all the boxes and also carries thoughts of innovation, creating and sharing and is just a big old happy face that just pulls even non gamers in.
For PS2, you missed Kratos. Kratos was really PS2's mascot. Look at the time's magazines.
Sony has no one mascot AAAA title, but it wouldn't surprise me to see Kratos, Drake, Sackboy, and a new crew beside them as well.
I'd say Sackboy, he can be anyone after all.
agree with Sackboy :)
Yeah, Sackboy has become Sony's Mario. I like many of the other Sony characters (many more than Sackboy), but Sackboy reaches across generations, and like Bowzabub said... Sackboy can be anyone.
I agree as well. If they need to have a mascot might as well make it him.
Sackboy is probably the best option. He's got his very own charisma, if we can call it that way.
Probably a new IP. I've had friends tell me they think Sackboy or Nathan Drake was the mascot of Sony this generation, whereas Ratchet or Jak were the ones they talked about last generation.
Kinda had Crash for the PS1 as well. Sony has never really had an official mascot. Remember once they said they had a diverse library of games, and didn't want to classify the system into a single character/genre...or something along those lines.
I believe Sony will have new Mascots for their next console, but they won't forget about the ones from their past. Even if they only come Vita side.
Yeah could Kat be the Mascot for the PS Vita?
Playstation has never had any mascot so why start now? And beside it's better this way instead of them milking just 1 franchise like Nintendo with Mario or MS with Halo.
I would say Crash Bandicoot was a PS mascot back in the PSone days.
That's the thing though, Sony really doesn't like to give use TOO much of one thing (and this is a really good thing). PSone gave us Crash Bandicoot PS2 gave us Kratos, Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter Then PS3 gives us Nathan Drake and Sackboy. As you can see, rather than having just one mascot, Sony likes to have an army.
Well, when somebody mentions God Of War people immediately think PS2 and PS3. Its not like GoW is going any where any time soon either. Nintendo: Mario Microsoft: Halo :Sony God Of War
but here the thing sony have wayyyyyyyy more Ips that could take the lead in ps1 era it was crash in ps2 era it was kratos in ps3 era it was Drake joel from the last of us could be the one who take the lead from ps3 era to ps4 era or could be a new iP in ps4 era.. i don't know
Playstations have never had *one* mascot, its always been multiple.
I would go with Sackboy now tbh, he applies to everyone and everybody :)
There were never mascots and wont be any for ps consoles
@wishingW3L and Godmars290 one will argue that Crash was originally Sony's Mascot
Yes, when they were first onto the scene Crash was the character they showed to the public. But then games like MGS and FF7 made Snake and Cloud spokesmen for what the system had to offer. Then the PS2 came along picking up Kratos and Sweet Tooth. PS3 got Drake and Sackboy. Point is that where MS has really only had Master Chief or Nintendo Mario and Link, Sony has earned mascots with each new generation. Whether they were used or not.
Nobody has mentioned this, but if Tearaway by MM kicks off then we could potentially be looking at the PS4's mascot to be? By "kicks off" I mean that they make a franchise of it and bring it to consoles rather than just the Vita. Alternatively, Joel and Ellie may see a return on the Ps4 if The Last Of Us proves to be a success.
I don't think anyone actually knows who master chief is. They just recognize the Halo dudes in the space suits, but I could be wrong. It's just if you show someone Master Chief they probably just say "Hey that's from Halo" but if you show someone Mario then they will instantly know it's Mario. The reasoning behind this is because Chief wears a mask and it's tricky to distinguish him from other characters who wear the space suit. OT, I think Sony could use multiple mascots for different regions/age groups. Example of this would be Sackboy can be used for younger aged children. Then you can use both Drake and Kratos for America since the games are pretty big there. Then you got your smaller mascots such as the Helghast or Cole McGrath. PlayStation has the variety.
Not true. People recognize the Chief. I played Halo Reach and none of the Noble 6 team looked like Master Chief. Heck I knew who Master Chief was even before I played a single Halo game.
Joel and Ellie... Or 8 days and Getaway protagonist, assuming they cancelled these titles to wait for next gen.
I'm so glad that there are some people still mentioning Eight Days and The Getaway. Let's hope both games will be on the PS4.
Their lost, but never forgotten... I'm still waiting on "The Last Guardian" as well or at least a demo of its gameplay...
IMO Kratos and Nathan Drake. But who knows because Sony is always creating new ips
He's gotta grow up sometime right? :P
ratchet and clank if anything with how many games and how long they have been around
sackboy should win the Playstation Mascot election
The Playstation brand is always changing mascots so I think that next gen we'll see completely new mascots. But, I also think that the previous mascots will still be important just like Ratchet, Kratos and Sly (soon) are now. Maybe even Joel or Ellie will be mascots provided The Last of Us is successul enough to be continued on the ps4.
Crash, Kratos, SackBoy, Nathan Drake are my contenders throughout the years but Playstation had Spyo, Rachet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Sly and his gang, Sweet Tooth, Cole McGrath, Helgahst...Can't really blame Sony for not choosing just ONE of those characters to represent something like Playstation. I believe that Crash was the PSX, Kratos was the PS2, and I can't choose for PS3 yet it's either SackBoy or Nathan Drake.
for the last goddam time, Sony doesn't need a mascot because they dont have just one single game they milk for decades.
Probably whatever Media Molecule come up with on the PS4, they seem cleaver that way.
Sony has always had solid snake, at least until metal gear went multi platform. But sony also has kratos, the helghast, nathan drake, sackboy, joel and ellie, sweet tooth and cole mcgrath. I'm sure I missed quite a few, but sony should have no problem finding a mascot
They don't have a mascot. They've never really had one. They've had characters that would make you think "Playstation," but there's pretty much always been more than one, and none of them have been de facto mascots. I don't see why that would change next gen.
Kratos is Sony Playstation's mascot. God of War is Sony's most popular story driven franchise by miles and his character and equipment has appeared in the most amount of games outside of his own franchise. He has also been parodied the most as well where he was even parodied in an episode of The Simpsons. Kratos is the most popular, recognisable, beloved character Sony has which is why he is their mascot but mainly for the older gamers, Sackboy is the mascot for the younglings who can't (shouldn't) play God of War.
Who will be Playstation's Mascot Next Gen? Obama!!
Crash on PS1 Ratchet and Jak on PS2 Sackboy, Kratos, and Nathan Drake on PS3
Why not Kratos during the PS2 era?
Sony will throw an unexpected curveball. It will be Pikachu after the buy up the rights.
The Gakai logo.
A banks logo.
As always there will not be a mascot for Playstation. Sony never nail their consoles down to one or two demographics.
