A year after its debut in Japan, new sales data gives us incite on where the system has performed best and worse in 2012.
ok how about we get Ratchet and Clank Full Frontal Assault, Sly Cooper Thieves in Time, Soul Sacrifice, Tearaway demos? and Killzone Mercenary beta?
Takes it easy buddy not everything at once...Calm down.
Ya but you and the other users here didn't need to thumb him down like that... Anyway, it seems like sony made the right choice but too bad the japanese yen is so strong. They should of just focused on Japan
Good point about the Yen, Mika. I'm sure that's a big part of it. These numbers are better than I thought, especially the US. I hope this doesn't affect games being localized in Europe.
Strong Yen? How come Wii U and 3DS are selling crazy numbers then? It's clearly not all about the Yen.
Omg Mika, who cares? I'm sure remanut won't kill himself over a few disagrees.
"Strong Yen? How come Wii U and 3DS are selling crazy numbers then? It's clearly not all about the Yen." I'm not sure you're understanding the point about the yen's current exchange rate. The strong yen would only affect sales if the price of the 3DS or Vita were floating, but they aren't. The prices are fixed. If they weren't, as the yen rose or the US dollar weakened, we'd see the prices of products made in Japan fluctuate up or down depending on currency rates. That clearly doesn't happen, so it has zero impact on sales of a product. What it does have an impact on is Sony or Nintendo's bottom line. If they're getting paid in US dollars, or euros for a product that cost them x number of yen to make, then as the other currencies weaken or the yen strengthens, then the dollars Sony or Nintendo get's for their products is lessened. During the worst of the market volatility, it was estimated that Sony at one point was receiving 25% less in revenue from products sold in Europe and the US than they were just a couple of years prior just due to the weakening of the US/Euro. FX rates are a huge reason why Sony and Nintendo, like most Japanese electronics makers, are struggling currently. Thankfully though the FX rates have been stabilizing and are expected to continue to help out companies like Sony/Nintendo. As for the article, where on earth is this data coming from? Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo don't break up their data per region, and look at the US figures. PS3: 2.2 million in the US for 2012? According the the NPD group, wasn't the PS3 over 4 million in the US by the end of November? And 3 million 360 sales for the year in the US? Pardon? According to NPD the 360 sold 1.2 million in the US in November alone. It's gotta be over 6-7 million for the year. Where are these BS numbers coming from?
This only means that PSV is in worst possition in EU and Japan, EU is switching to Tablets + Smartphones Japan is all about 3DS + Smartphones + Tablets Nice piece of tech released in the worst time ever, Vita had no chance, should have been released in 2009 and it could have fared better...
Ratchet and Clank Full Frontal Assault is out man! other stuff is too much to ask you know.
i cant find it on the psvita store, heck i cant even find a ratchet and clank vita video on youtube, anyways obviously sony isnt going to get all those demos out at the same time but it would be kool to get at least Sly Cooper Thieves in Time demo before 2013.
I didn't mean the PSV version .. sorry
@remanutd55 Remember to buy the PS3 version of Ratchet and Clank. You'll get the Vita version for free once it's released. It was delayed until next year.
USA... the most important place to sell games. THE MOST IMPORTANT IF YOU WANT YOUR STUFF TO BE POPULAR!
what good will ports do?
The Vita is big in the US and Europe, because the games are geared towards the western market. Wait until next year, The Vita will do some good numbers in Japan with all the great games coming before March 31st, 2013. 2013 is the year of the Gamer, no matter what platform you play one.
"big"....really? those numbers do not reflect big.
It's bigger in the US and Europe, because the games are geared towards the western market. It should have been bigger by now, but the price is one thing and Nintendo scar a lot of people with the sudden price cut, and I don't think people want that to happen again. Especially when you hear personally from Sony telling the media that a price cut will happen next year.
So true, PC Gamers will be getting Crysis 3, a game that is expected to melt graphics cards like the original Crysis, we also have Metro Lat Light, Arma 3, and Watch Dogs. amazing year for PC gamers, PS3 has God of War, Last of us, Beyond, and 360 has Gears, Splinter Cell, Tomb Raider. Should be an amazing year.
pc and ps3 owners also have splinter cell and tomb rider that leaves xbox with gears only
360 and PS3 also have Crysis 3, Metro Last Light and Watchdogs.
Seriously guys, down votes ? I was referring to the specific games that shined on certain systems. Crysis 3 is DX11 only, and has been said to be far ahead of the console version. Same goes for Metro and Watch Dogs.
I'm sorry, but I had to make a account to say this: Unlike a certain Japanese company; Nintendo actually gave away 20 free titles via the Nintendo eShop. Sure, they are NES and GBA games; but I haven't seen another company do that for a price drop. Some of those NES titles and all of the GBA titles are exclusive to early backers, so I feel like my purchase back in March 2011 was worth every penny. (Even if they were made available to the public, which I wish they were; I'd still feel like my purchase was justified.) I also do own a PS Vita, PSP (because that's still this/last-gen with PS3 and Xbox; right?) Xbox 360, and PS3 so please don't just jump to conclusions that I'm a Nintendo fanboy; because I'm not.
So, how is that a reply to my comment? I never mentioned Nintendo in my comment. Sony never gave away 20 retro titles, unless you think of PlayStation Plus (But thats a paid service). But they did give away 4 games to those affected by the hack. Due to their bad network. Nintendo gave away 20 games (20 of which I have as well) because they prematurely dropped the price of the 3DS, because of the unexpected sales of the system. One was a welcome back and the other was more of an apology to those that bought the system a few months before the drop(I accepted with open arms). You will probably never see that happen again for a price drop, because not many console makers drop a system's price 5 months after launch. Every console maker has tried to appease their consumers and keep them. Whether it's give away games, due to a hack or a price drop being so sudden. I think, if something of that nature would happen again, the console maker will try it's best to please and win back their customer base.
It was towards your third comment, the site wouldn't let me reply directly to that comment so I replied to this one. My bad not mentioned the comment number. Also, the PSN Hack/game giveaway totally blew right past my mind. I didn't get a PS3 until shortly after. :S
Insightful. Two of the best-selling Vita games in Japan, Hatsune Miku Project Diva f and Persona 4 the Golden both sold around the 300,000 mark. If around 500,000+ Vitas were sold in Japan, then the software conversion rate for those games are like, 1 in 2. That's kinda scary if you think about it. Like if you see someone on a train playing the Vita, there's a 50% chance he has 1 of those 2 games.
I play my Vita on the train in Japan, and don't own either..
Haha, congratulations on being in the 25th percentile that don't own either (50% x 50%? I'm not good at math). What do you play on your Vita?
I play my Vita on the train in Japan, and I own both. We balance each other out.
@ Mister428 Too early to be thinking about the percentages, but this year I've mainly be playing: Motorstorm RC Mah Jong Fight Club Metal Gear Solid 2 (a lot) Gravity Daze (Rush) Unit 13 (which I'm enjoying) @ knifefight Nice! I don't see many other Vita gamers on the train, but then again, these days I don't see many handheld gamers at all. That is, not counting phone based fluff.
I've only ever seen 2 Vitas in the wild. I could see over one person's shoulder and it looked like he was playing Lord of Apocalypse (I can't be sure cause I don't have that game -- this was like right after launch so it seems a likely bet, because I knew which games it WASN'T), but I don't know about the other guy. I should also say for our previous stat, I own Persona 4 Golden but haven't played it yet. Miku, I play at home because all the swiping and rhythmic taping might be problematic to the people around me -- and you know how the locals worry about disturbing each other ^^;; But still! When I'm playing my Vita on the go it's usually... Gravity Daze, Hot Shots Golf (this is my ultimate go-to), WipEout 2048, or the PSP Valkyria Chronicles 3 (got it cheap from the UMD passport program, since I have the PSP version).
@ knifefight Cool. lol about upsetting the locals on the train. I was recently playing a ton of Gravity Rush, and had to be selective about which sections I played during the commute; trying to get gold on some of the challenges was definitely a no no for the train! I recently started Unit 13, and that seems pretty ideal for the commute.
i got my vita on blk friday. i have downloaded a couple of plus games since i got it. i am loving the vita. i can not wait for Killzone Mercenary.
Im very interested to know the details of Killzone multiplayer.
900001 for US. That 1 makes all the difference.
I blame Capcom for skipping Monster Hunter away from the Vita... but I'm really looking forward to Soul Sacrifice even though it's more arena based than hunting. Edit: Oh yeah, like Godchild1020 said. The demo is out but only for the Japanese PSN. They might release it in NA since the devs wrote a holiday blog. Hopefully, they release an english version so I can finally understand what I'm doing in the game. http://blog.us.playstation....
While the Vita didn't get Monster Hunter, it did get some great replacements to take it's place. I played the Soul Sacrifice demo, I found it enjoyable and can't wait for the release.
Can't blame capcom however, if you're going to play that style of gamewhy not blame Sony for not getting GT Vita lined up for a 2012 release.
Wow for your name being CommonSenseGamer you seem to have no common sense at all. Blame Sony for not having GT Vita lined up for 2012? Fail.
Mohan will come to 3DS only in summer. How long will it be for the game to release outside Japan - only Capcom knows. Till then PSV will have Ragnarok Odyssey, Soul Sacrifice, Phantasy Star Online and God Eater 2. I can care less for Mohan.
Hmm. 900k in he US compared to 238k in the Uk is about the same proportionaly given the population size isnt it?
Hopefully this means Tales will get a localization.:) I was also surprised where it said that RPG's are the best selling genre.
Im not surprised by this at all since most of the games appeal to western audiences.
Funny, 'cause I'm seeing a lot of past Vita games that are Japan only, and pretty much all of the future Vita games I see are Japan only, too.
Because the Japanese hate us unless they're making a lot of money off us. Just compare how many western developed games that get released in Japan. Just about every single one of them, and then how many Japan developed games don't get released in the west. Most of them.
Good to hear. The more units it sells, the more publishers will pay attention to it.
And the less publishers pay interest, the less it will sale. I bought one just for LBP. Had a nice surprise with uncharted however. Hope it gets some more great games in 2013.
I was also surprised at how much I am enjoying uncharted, I really enjoyed all the console versions with 2 being my favorite. I was planning on skipping GA well unless I caught it on a super great deal and then it was offered for ps+ and oh man what a great game, I should have bought it the same day I bought my vita it's that good. So far my favorite games ar U:GA Gravity Rush, Persona 4, LBP, Unit 13, but really I've enjoyed everything I bought so far and still have more titles I want to pick up.
I am getting one tomorrow, But the Boxing day sale for the vita is fucking weak. Oh well I will shop around a couple store and see if i get lucky. If anyone spots a good sale north of the border reply to this or PM me please !! :)
I'd say check CheapAssGamer everyday. you'll eventually spot a sale that someone is doing.
Vita sucks and needs more non ports and of course the price drop and that's coming next year so hopefull sales will go up but if not then people really don't like the system
Vita rocks and has plenty of non ports.
^^^ This. Anyway, what's wrong with ports? Especially considering most of Vita's ports are upgraded versions of a game. "Disgaea 3, Persona 4 Golden, Mortal Kombat (Not graphically on this one, but gameplay-wise), also getting a better version of DOA5 apparently." I have quite a few ports which I'm really happy with. I also currently own 6 Vita exclusive titles right now and the system hasn't even been out a year yet. I'd say that's a pretty good amount. 7 if you include a Japanese import lol. That's not even taking into account PSN Vita games like Sound Shapes, Super Stardust, Escape Plan, etc.
Actually, i was turned off by the Mortal Kombat game on the Vita. There's an input lag compared to the PS3 version. I dont know if they have patched it but when I downloaded it from PSN day 1 when it was released... it was horrible.
@Metroid Funny people could use that exact same logic on the wii u, too many ports and too expensive therefore it sucks. (which is true to an extent it is the most expensive console and has the least original titles) Whether it sucks or is awesome is purely a personal opinion. But if someone said that about the wii u, you and the rest of the 2012 nintendo defense brigade would bring out the war drums. For a person always talking down to others, telling the idiots to do their research, your dumbass should look up the terms subjective and opinion and stop confusing them with facts.
and yet japan still has vita games that the rest of the world doesnt have, with numbers like that for NA over Japan, you would think that ALL games would come to NA
What? A piece of video game hardware sells the most in the world's biggest video game market? I think even Pachter could have seen this one coming.
Well, its not really surprising. Generally everything sells best in the US.
Its pretty much just Fifa and Dragon Quest that sells more in other countries
Holy crap, submitter: "A year after its debut in Japan, new sales data gives us incite on where the system has performed best and worse in 2012." Incite? INCITE? I think you also mean "best and worst". /tsdr
people didn't like the psvita until they found out that it can play downloaded psone and psp games. i want one
What surprises me is.
I bought my son a 3ds this xmas.
I've compared the two, some games that are on both, and the vita version always looks clearer and runs better.
Leaves me with the conclusion that people are buying the 3ds for Mario/playing 2ds games/current trend.
Maybe it's the rez of the screen.
3DS 800x240 - Top screen that matters.
VITA 960x544 - Amazing clarity.
Not really understanding why the 3ds sells like it does.
Sony clearly needs to do something in the Land of the Rising Sun. Too much games are geared towards the western audience, not that its a bad thing but we can clearly see the difference here and Japan is suppose to be one of the biggest handheld gaming market.
Got a vita for Christmas, this thing is beastly! 8 player party/cross game chat. I can't even put this thing down lol! My PS3 is mad at me right now but I still got love for it.
Please give me a MGS vita title (New title not remake)
The Vita is amazing! Uncharted Is just like it is on the console.
not close really. It looks great and I really love the game but I believe the PSVita is still/just not powerful enough. Maybe it's a matter of time for developers to get more out of it but it feels like the more demanding games are hitting a red line... I just hope I am wrong and they surprise me with another Uncharted game with even better graphics and constant framerate.
And Near! I also added PS:All Stars on Vita and it plays well. I'm really shocked at how it holds up. I can't wait for TearAway :-)
They seriously need to stop the doom articles. The vita hasn't even been out for a full year, other handhelds where also slow out of the gate. The vita is a beautiful beast and people need to try it for themselves before they hate.
