FXN: Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Trailer Impressions

The debut trailer for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII was released at Jump Festa, and in the trailer are some good aspects, as well as some bad (and a little ugly) aspects. Before FXN goes through their impressions of the trailer, there are some things that you might have missed, so FXN goes through those first. (Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, PS3, Xbox 360)

As a FFXIII-1 hater, I'm surprised to say that this looks fresh and AMAZING. Framerate needs a lot of work though. Let's hope they fix it up by the time its released this game.

I'm pretty sure that the frame-rate problems are a result of the trailer. Just the way that it is stuttering, I suspect that it was an encoding issue. I'm surprised that they would mess that up though, but then again it would not be a first time they did something amateur like that http://www.uffsite.net/news...

Why the hell is Square Enix not moving past this?
Even Final Fantasy X, which is arguably one of the best installments in the FF franchise, only had one direct sequel. Yet FFXIII now has two sequels.

I doubt the sales statistics for FF XIII and FFX show FFXIII anymore of a reasonable project expansion than FFX.

I agree on one level that commercial viability should not entirely overcome artistic ambition, but come on. I'm sure even the top executives and shareholders of S-E know that FFXIII is not exactly, historically, the most likable portion of the Final Fantasy franchise.

They're just being lazy. They get to reuse assets from the other two games by doing this which makes for a relatively shorter development time.
goldwyncq  +   802d ago
Actually they said they're using assets from Versus XIII this time.
N4GDgAPc  +   802d ago
Thats not being lazy. Every developer does this. believe it or not they even grab assets from different games they made. Uncharted 2 reused assests from 1 and Uncharted 3 used 2 and 1. Which Naughty Dog is the only developer that made a comment about it in the game. when you cross a latter Drake says "Look this was last years model".

Because believe it or not its not all about what you want. There is plenty of people that would like a sequal like me. I loved FF13 and 13-2. And I think its funny how people are suprised there is a 3rd one coming out when ff13-2 ended with to be continued.

Another mediocre sequel/spinoff to the worst FF ever made. Not interested and never will be.
silkrevolver  +   802d ago
The worst (main) FF ever made was II for the NES.
Snookies12  +   802d ago
FFII wasn't bad, it was just hard as hell.

Don't say worst since FFII here in the us for NES was not the actually 2. So before you say something know what the subject you are speaking ill is about.

@cupcake

There is a reason I specified "for the NES"
kalkano  +   802d ago
I wouldn't say that FF2 was bad, but I do think it was the "worst" FF. Still a good game, but it doesn't quite match up with the others in the series.

I'm NOT giving any hate.....I'm very interested, loved FF-XIII & I like the FF character Lightning!!

FF13 must of been your first FF.

Well I think SE here is aware that a new generation of gamers are being brought into the forefront. Our generation, the PS1 era, is somehow coming to a close; like some of us has aged and all that.

Though this is the case, abandoning a franchise staple fans for a new set of audience will have ill effects in the future.

"like some of us has aged and all that."

I'd like to know the secret of those that didn't age. ;)
elda  +   802d ago
@Youndamie....Your ABSOLUTELY WRONG!!!..... I've first played FF when the american version of FF-2 & 3 was for the Super Nintendo I've haven't played the online versions,my favorite FF are 8,10 & 13 but enjoyed all the ones I've played.

@elda I apologize for making that assumption. While the gameplay mechanics of FF13 were interesting the story, character design and development were the weakest of any final fantasy. Not to mention the transformer eidolons that were absolutely useless throughout the game. Lightning was simply a boring protagonist, Fang would been much more appropriate. If it actually had a decent story I would have found this game acceptable.

Why is everyone negative? Even if you don't like it, why do you care so much? It's just a video game, not the story of your life.
Nicaragua  +   802d ago
I care so much because i would rather see more variety from the FF franchise within a console lifecycle. On the PS1 we had 3 different FF games with different characters and settings whereas this generation we have had 3 scoops of the same shit.

13 was awful and SE need to move on.

I was let down by the original and to my surprise really enjoyed XIII-2.

I have to admit this trailer actually lowered my anticipation for the game. I'm ready to move onto something fresh, sequels are not really my thing.

I much prefer the "spiritual successor" which hold similarities to the original. That way you have fresh experiences with the developed ideas and themes from the previous games. This is what made Final Fantasy exciting, and tying in direct sequels destroys that charm.

I was waiting for FFVS13 not another sequel to FF13.
