Five things in gaming that sounded cool but ended up sucking

GameZone writes, "Have you ever wished that you could sit in on your favorite game’s development meeting months, even years, before it ever hit store shelves? Hearing producers, designers, and artists toss around ideas that would be transported from paper to digital media, and eventually boxed on a compact disc for the world to see – simply put, it has to be an amazing process. But what happens when some of those ideas go wrong? When a grand idea turns south when players finally get their hands on it? It’s happened hundreds of times in gaming, and we’ve compiled a list of our five favorite things in gaming that sounded cool but ended up, well, sucking." (Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Crackdown 2, Fable 3, Kinect Sports: Season Two, PS3, Xbox 360)

Final Fantasy XIII, XIII-2, Lightning Returns, DmC, and RE6.

Since your list contains games that aren't even out, it obviously can't be taken seriously.

I'd agree on RE6, as it's a Resident Evil in name only.

DmC is shaping up to be the same, but it still looks like it'll be decent. Just... not DMC.

Lightning Returns, as previously stated, isn't out yet, so it's unclear as to whether or not it will suck. Of course, there's obvious bias against this game.

XIII-2 is okay. Nothing really to write home about. Yeah, yeah: that's not the response to have to a Final Fantasy, but it's not like every other FF has been crap; one or two that people don't really care for should be acceptable. SHOULD be.

Don't care what anyone says, I really enjoyed XIII. I particularly liked the dynamics created by splitting the party up into pairs of contrasting characters. The Sazh/Vanille section is my favorite part. I didn't mind the linearity, though a little more exploration of Pulse would have been nice. Overall, though, a much better game than people give it credit for.

And no, I'm not a "new" FF player.

Oh, well. Guess I should be used to that response by now.

Quite honestly, you "taking it seriously" hasn't even entered into my thought processes as being something that I care about, or as being necessary for the validity of my list.

"Lightning Returns, as previously stated, isn't out yet, so it's unclear as to whether or not it will suck. Of course, there's obvious bias against this game."

Given the degree of fail that the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy has been thus far, the attitude of the director in where he wants to take Final Fantasy, and comparing it to previous FF games, the margin of error that exists that could counter the statement that Lightning Returns sucks and will suck is quite low. Even from the trailer we can see that it's nothing really new and that SE is continuing to try and shove Lightning down our throats as the new Mascot of Final Fantasy.

"XIII-2 is okay. Nothing really to write home about. Yeah, yeah: that's not the response to have to a Final Fantasy, but it's not like every other FF has been crap; one or two that people don't really care for should be acceptable. SHOULD be."

The difference being that FFXIII-2 was a sequel no one asked for, exists due to all the cuts made from the first game that was terrible, and is a metaphorical polished turd, but ok.

"Don't care what anyone says, I really enjoyed XIII. I particularly liked the dynamics created by splitting the party up into pairs of contrasting characters. Not really. For starters, even though many FF games are "linear" in the beginning, that is effectively hidden by the presence of lively NPC's and houses to enter giving a sense of exploration even when you can't do much. The characters in the game were just awful. Sazh was only good because he was the least awful of the group but still forgettable. If you like being forced to go in a straight line, that's your choice, but it's still poor game design built on Toriyama's desire to make FF more like a shooter. And no, it's not a much better game than people give it credit for. When the general belief on the game is that it sucks, reflected in the sales of its sequel due to a loss of faith, you can pretty much legitimately say it's a terrible excuse of a Final Fantasy game.

"And no, I'm not a "new" FF player."

Guess it depends on what you mean by "new." If you like the linearity of FFXIII, I don't see how you could have played games like FFI or FFIV and enjoyed them. But hey, maybe your taste in FF games has devolved over the years.

Hey now
Kinect never sounded cool. You kinda have to expect the first gen of tech like that to be disappointing. Kinect 2 should be interesting, though. More precise tracking and all.

Edit: Jeez I just thought of something. If next gen is focusing on Omni VR tech and all that what if we can scan ourselves with Kinect and make a virtual 3D copy..? Whenever you put your glasses on you could be with a twin. Or your girlfriend, or whatever. Obviously they wouldn't copy voice patterns, precise body language and all that. But still, a 3d copy of you... I hope they do that, it'd be quite neat.

BackBreaker:

That game is one huge tech demo for the Euphoria engine and sports games. It works well and feels more real than Madden could ever. But it has no franchises and lacks all the other features a football should have. They need to take the physics and implement it into future Madden titles.
