Original 'Dead Space' featured co-op at end of development

The original Dead Space nearly featured a co-operative multiplayer mode, it has revealed.

Visceral Games experimented with a co-op mode towards the end of its development cycle, but decided that it "didn't make sense with the story", executive producer Steve Papoutsis told Digital Spy.

When asked why the team didn't introduce co-op sooner, Papoutsis said: "I like that question! Why not? Actually, funny story - Dead Space 1, we turned on co-op at the end, we were running around at the very end of development just to see if we could do it.

"We could do it, but it was way too in development, it didn't make sense with the story, we weren't ready to do it but it was something that we thought about." (Dead Space 3, PC, PS3, Visceral games, Xbox 360)

" but decided that it "didn't make sense with the story"

KEY part there . So it's kinda hollow to use such failed experiment as a justification for DS3 ...

While i disagree that co-op is the way to go with the series, dead space 1 was not built for co-op from a gameplay nor a story perspective. Dead space 3 is being built for both a single campaign and a co-op one, so it will work better than if they just threw it in on the first game.

If you play it solo you will actually be solo. >____>

Forgive me for being blunt, but it is my firm belief that co-op does not belong in survival horror.
Unfortunately, from what I've seen of Dead Space 3 so far it is more of an action game than a survival horror. That first game was so great, to me it was perfect, the game I had been waiting for since Resident Evil became more action and less horror. Dead Space 2... it was good, but nowhere near as immersive as its predecessor and I really do believe I can justify blaming this on the increase in "action." I think that for me, Dead Space 3 will be an absolute trainwreck, just an outright abomination. I don't see myself having any of those moments like in the first one where I was literally on the edge of my seat every single moment aboard the Ishimura, questioning at every corner whether or not some monstrosity would lurch forth and end my fragile engineer life. Now it's more like Isaac is a supersoldier wielding powerful weapons and accompanied by another equally formidable ally up against a horde of creepy yet easily manageable foes.
It's a little depressing, really. The first game was released and I finally had hope again for the survival horror genre and it was promptly eviscerated.
Thanks, EA.

I know people like co-op and trust me with the right game playing with friends can be a blast, but not survival horror. Any co-op, multiplayer, social or online aspects should be forever canned from survival horror games, they have no place. Call me a purist but survival horror is all about setting atmosphere, no music, no shitty jump scares, messing with the player's mind and being all alone.

Doesn't mean that it should be in Dead Space 3. That is all.

Even if this was true, it was still taken out for a reason.
