Why Does Square Enix Develop So Many Social Games?

Siliconera: "Square Enix sure make a lot of social and browser games these days. There’s Traveling Fairy for Mobage, Emperors SaGa for GREE, and Final Fantasy: Airborn Brigade to name just a few. Recently, Square also announced Star Galaxy.

Why so many social titles?" (Industry, Square Enix)

Exactly. It's sad, but this is true.

Because their CEO (Yoichi Wada) is not that clever.

Their CEO could have used the time and effort of their employees on better things and make more money.

But his decision making is all wrong. He doesnt know how to take calculated risks.

They saw the success of the apps for Apple & figured that they can do the same. The problem is that many Apple app games are super cheap (0.99) whereas Squarenix is charging up to $15 for some of their social games.

yeah it is easy money but only if you price it accordingly so that the masses will be interested.

Which is really laughable. Most big gaming companies like square enix and Sega try to sell their iOS/android games for $6 and more and they sell like crap compared to other mobile games.

How do you like mobile gaming now, huh Sega and square? Nobody would buy your crap if its anything more than $3 dollars. Better get used to it if you think mobile gaming is the "future"

This video will show you the answer as to why square does it:

because they sell...gamers are not wanting new full retail games after playing final fantasy XIII and XIV. I know those ruined my faith in square enix.

They just keep scraping the Final Fantasy name through the dirt... Why are they doing this to such a beloved franchise? *sigh*
WiigotU  +   157d ago
Why not invest money make a great game which in turn makes money. Look at COD duty as a financial success story.
CrescentFang  +   157d ago
In Japan (not anywhere else)... afaik, social games are selling like crazy in Japan. Easy money, low risks.

If they really want to make some money then why don't they release Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII in the West on iOS and Android, instead of taking the piss out of the FF name with all this social crap. Makes so much more sense. Its the only part of the compilation of FFVII that we haven't got and I'm pretty sure sales would be more than all these social ones combined.
