There's a reason Electronic Arts is planning to drop Spore's "creature creator" component an unspecified amount of time before the game ships in early September. To hear lead designer Alex Hutchinson describe it, the creation tools - of which the creature variant is just one part - comprise 66% of Spore's total experience. In truth, the core "game" of evolving a single-celled organism into a vast, multi-planetary species takes only a few hours of play. It's Spore's constant unpredictability, fueled by a presumably infinite supply of user-created content, which the developer is hoping will keep players coming back for more.
