Doesnt matter if it's a sequel or prequel. The lore of the game was deep but you'd actually have to piece it together and even then the lore itself is just the player's own assumption.
Numbers typically just indicate they're part of a series and nothing more.
Disgaea / Final Fantasy are numbered, though they got nothing to do with one another. Lost Planet 3 is a reboot and "takes place prior" to the first game. Metal Gear Solid 3 is a prequel. etc
