Kotaku - The BioShock games have always had a weightier tone to them than just shooting things in the face. The first game was lightly basted in an Ayn Rand marinade, while the upcoming BioShock Infinite deals with some tricky issues like racism.
WHAT DA... Oh, It's The Internet.
Haha yeah, summed it up there. "I wonder how many sci-fi twists I would have to make, before I could create a game about some white midwestern townsfolk shooting hordes of samoli immigrants." What's a Samoli immigrant?
I think he meant "Somalians" or "Salami" (referring to an assortment of colors, as a spotted meat?? I'm PRETTY SURE I've heard that expression once before. Somalians seems too specific, I think?) Anyway, assuming it wasn't meant as a racist thing (after much research, I'm not sure), there's nothing wrong with this comment: "So you go around blasting white patriots. I get it. They aren't human, there is a "force" at work, the vox populi movement is not much better. The whole city is an evil death weapon. They promote eugenics, they hate foreigners, they love Washington, their utopia is a dystopia, due to... whatever. Essentially your still running around blasting white patriots. I wonder how many sci-fi twists I would have to make, before I could create a game about some white midwestern townsfolk shooting hordes of samoli immigrants" It's true. Look at RE5; white guy shoots black people because he's in Africa. "ZOMG RACIST" You can make a game about killing dumb white people (they're meant to be stereotyped Americans, let's not dance around that) that run around being patriotic and hating non-white people any day of the week.
No, its Kotaku. That's like the "Da Internetz" only distilled and applied towards gaming. Dare I say Kotaku is the Fox News of gaming, or is that too harsh? What really gets me more than articles like this is that they run Youtube videos through their own player so they can't be embedded on N4G - you have to go to their site in what is an obvious manipulative ploy to generate hits.
That is exactly what they are. The Fox new of gaming. I used to frequent there sites often until they started to create articles simply as flamebait for people to get worked up over trivial things. Kotaku should be banned IMO.
2 people in a forum said something!!!! QUICK MAKE IT AN ARTICLE!
Mezzo please stop submitting Kotaku articles. They're terrible quality and don't have anything good to contribute. They're a glorified blog except with worse content.
But then Mezzo won't get paid with bubbles ;)
ahah last I checked Jews are white people, perhaps the whitest.
I'm sure Hitler was thrilled at that news.
But they and others identify them differently. FREQUENTLY are they identified as their own race. I'M NOT SAYING I AGREE WITH THE RACIST POSTERS. I'm just saying, because a lot of people don't seem to realize that.
i thought albinos were the whitest.lol
To be exact true Jews had Swarthy skin tone kind of like the People of the Middle east.
yes they cam from europe and mixed with the original jews. ironic they are called Ashkenazi jews. nazi.....
someone seems seriously disturbed.
OW!!! FLIPPING OW!!! I GOT A MIGRANE READING THAT!!!
Well, considering the popularity of foreigner-killing simulators like Uncharted, Resident Evil 5, Call of Duty and Max Payne 3 I guess it's only fair to have a game like this. /SATIRICAL /SATIRICAL /SATIRICAL Did I mention I'm not being serious?
I don't even know what life is anymore....
I heard the game has you do some pretty crazy stuff like throwing rocks at an interracial couple etc. Not cool.
That would be awesome
Oh looks it's Kotaku.. Not surprising
Im still going to play this game
You've gotta be kidding me. Bioshock Infinte is all white people, so the game is a white-person killing simulator. RE5 was in Africa, so it's racist when you only kill Black people in the game. Do you know what I noticed? Nobody called RE4 racist when the only people you kill in that game are europeans...
Worse yet, those were spanish...
spain is in europe buddy ;)
It's the internet. At this point, nothing is short of surprising in the form of people saying racist things. Twitter and Youtube are flooded with moronic statements and offensive messages. It just goes to show who uses their brain and common sense and who doesn't.
The white supremacist quoted in the article clearly knows gaming: "But 99% of the company owners with the actual power are Jewish, such as Levine, Robert Kotick of Activision (the guys who make Grand Theft Auto) etc." And good he didn't include spoilers since he has obviously played the whole game since he knows the plot, even though it's not out until next year...
Since when did being Jewish (a religion) become a race?
Since about 3000 years ago in the Middle East, if not further back.
So... blue eyed Caucasian people who's religion happens to be Jewish, are a different race than blue eyed Caucasian people who aren't? That sounds like a "master race" complex, something Hitler would say. That kind of thinking is why I'm an atheist. There are white Jews, black Jews, Arab Jews, and even Asian Jews. It's a religion not a race. Race http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... Religion http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... Atheism http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... This lesson is free
The jews really do consider themselves their own race. Doesn't make any sense, but that is just how it is.
AWWWWWWW! SHIT HERE WE GO AGAIN.
2013 is around the corner and this fuckery still exist?
It's because retarded people are still allowed to breed.
All aboard the grow some balls train!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems racism increasing in the world lately
Nah, people are just getting bolder about it. Racism, "otherism" whatever you want to call it is deeply embedded in the human psyche. Actually, considering our history it's amazing how "tolerant" we've become. Regarding Kotaku, yeah they're a bit pulpy at times when it comes to covering games but I think they do the industry and fans a service when they cover a story like this. Get it out there, sunlight is the greatest disinfectant. Well done Kotaku.
You're only noticing it more because more people are reporting it. The Internet screams when even a single person says some shit out of line. Remember when there was no Internet? There wasn't as much "news". By "news" I mean petty garbage that doesn't deserve a headline
No, the media just likes to keep people in a false sense of fear with race-baiting articles like this. The amount of people that are a part of actual hate groups in america today only numbers to 50,000 at the most in a nation of 300 million people. The first world today is the most tolerant it has ever been thaks to civil rights movements and education promoting diversity. Not saying there is not racism, but it's not "increasing" as you put it.
Well I think Ken and his creativity are falling back on genuine ideals and attitudes of the time, in a sense of culminating a fantasy experience with a real one - much like Assassin's Creed III. There's nothing wrong with that. But, this is video games and someone always has to die, to the point where the audience becomes desensitized to who is being killed simply because games lack the complexity and depth to make killing have a more emotional impact. I care not for who I'm killing in games like Bioshock, the characters existence becomes inconsequential because often they are portrayed in a black and white manner - friend or foe with little real consequence of the action. Players are rarely given much choice, and when they do have choice, the motives are often quite simplistic rather than something that's cleverly designed to make one think beyond the act of sparing a life or snuffing it out. Bioshock has you harvest or save little girls as a gameplay mechanic, but there's no definition beyond this to make an impact on the player. Until games go deep enough in providing true reason, motive and consequence then as I already said, it's just killing where colour of skin. race etc. really doesn't come into the equation. All characters in video games are expendable, including those fighting on the same side. I believe it would be great if games actually punished players for their rogue, murderous decisions; to make them think beyond simply restarting a checkpoint or save game. But also reward those who are clever in committing such acts. I like games where players are forced to think beyond their own character, and that a loss is really a terrible thing - XCOM springs to mind where players spend time building up stats of a squad only to have them die by a dodgy player decision. Without reloading, there's a genuine sense of loss. As for this particular piece that Kotaku simply ripped from other sources and changed their original hit grabbing headline, yeh nice one fellas. Lead by example eh. The original Ken Levine interview at PCGamer is quite an interesting read.
"I believe it would be great if games actually punished players for their rogue, murderous decisions; to make them think beyond simply restarting a checkpoint or save game. But also reward those who are clever in committing such acts." Did You play Spec Ops: The Line? I believe that game fits the bill. http://www.youtube.com/watc...
The problem with these racists types is they are cowards ruled by fear. They realize they cannot compete so they lash out at others who they perceive to be a threat. Racism, hate, sexism, homophobia etc. etc. are signs of the weak minded. They are easily led down the path of hate, with no conviction or intestinal fortitude to discover their own path to the truth. Reminds me of a quote from Voltaire- "Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities". These types of folks are like sheep being led astray, lacking the intellect to realize they are being led to their own destruction. Which reminds me of a quote attributed to Einstein-"The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has it's limits". These morons typify that statement.
I do already feel stupid for wasting my thoughts on what the article quoted. Those people are only a small number of stupid and poor people, yet the internet gives them the feeling their opinion is worth more than it is. It's not. I rememberna show or article, I think it was on GT's IW, where they also said that some of the racist undertones in the game would cause some negative press, but gosh, I never expected that some stupid white people would feel offended ... The closing comment nailed it btw: " [...] this is the internet. There's always someone worse." Edit: I should say that the racist undertones are just a reflection of the time the game is set in, it's not meant to be offensive by the developers and doesn't represent their opinion, they just want to reflect the zeitgeist and include it as a story element, just like AC 3 very recently. It's part of the accuracy of the setting and I don't waste my time to think about whether it's right or not, because it's a game and things are different in todays reality.
