Here Are Three Possible Reasons For Including Rape In Far Cry 3

Kotaku - Here are a few things you can expect Far Cry 3 to include: shark-punching, pirate-killing, hang gliding and, oh, rape. For those playing, maybe that's not surprising—as you go along, you suspect it'll happen at any moment. Your friends have been captured, and two of these friends are attractive young women. One is an award-winning swimmer and the other is a Hollywood actress.

There are a couple of instances where the game almost threatens a rape: a camera lingering between the legs of a woman, or a villain touching your girlfriend in an uncomfortable way will trigger alarms. You're anticipating rape. (Far Cry 3, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

There IS rape in this game, just not related to the actual definition of the term.

It's rediculous that people make a big deal of these types of scenes in video games. It's literally a game where you are killing hundreds a mabey thousands of times and that's all fine without any nuanced undertones or some sort of statement about the world woven into the story but the second someone brings any sort of sexual assault out as a conflict device everyones up in arms. I hate to break it to the world but there are a lot of places where the rules as civilized people see them aren't followed. How many places in the world are people kidnapped and sold into sex slave trade every day. There are places on the planet that attrocities probably outnumber anything good that happens, but if you try to include the truths of the world into your story everyone wants to hang you for it. Its not like this is what the game is centered on or something its just one portion of the story. The only reason its being made into a big deal is one person latching on to it and waving it around in front of everyone. I mean come on really do you think things like this don't happen in the world probably on a daily basis. Just because you want to hide from the truth doesn't make it not happen.

I can't believe we're still talking about this, I finished the game last night and yeah, the ending I chose is fucked up and disturbing but it's all in context, the now infamous "sex scene" is preceded by some even more twisted material which nobody in the gaming press has mentioned.
And FFS, "White Messiah", have these guys played the whole game? Brody is a pawn, it's the Rakyat who are using him, I don't want to spoil but the "sex scene" is where he finds out Sitra's real motivation for helping him. The game is dark and insane, the idea of a "White Messiah" isn't even hinted at, this comes from the gaming press and their PC indoctrination, they see "racism" even when it isn't there.
GOTY for me, just on the campaign but the whole package is fantastic value, there are already some great user designed MP maps online

Oh I'm sure it is. And that's exactly my point. There are rediculous attrocities that we dole out daily in games like this but as soon as one is sexual assault people start screaming about it. Really pick something better or at least something like violence or murder which is far more prevelant in games like this. Honestly I dont think anyone has room to complain about stuff like this because there are far worse stories in movies and television everyday but you only hear about these things in video games because parents ignore the age ratings and buy this stuff for thier 10yr old, now he has wierd questions about subject he really doesn't understand, when its the parents fault for even exposing them to such subjects. I know they aren't supposed to be considered just for kids anymore however they still have the stigma that video games are just toys and when people see subjects like this in games they assume the worst and dont look at the whole picture.

*Spoilers*

This article isn't even about the sex scene, just fyi. This is about the off-screen rape of one of Jason's buddies by the crazy Aussie slave driver and Ubisoft's inability to contextualize or bring any real meaning to the "atrocities" that transpire in the game.

And to a degree, I agree with that sentiment. I mean it's still one of my favorite games of the year, but I felt like a lot of the violence and sex and general insanity was thrown in for the shock value, because I literally didn't care for any of Jason's bro-friends...like, at all. In fact the few scenes of context that were thrown in seem to want to get players to hate them.

@ Violents. You do realize violence in games is still criticized to this day right? The thing is, more developers are including these social or sexual themes and it's fairly new. So it overshadows the mindless violence encountered in game.

I'm not saying it isnt, it just seems that you get one small scene in a game where its sexual abuse lnstead of physical abuse or straight murder and people seem to get way more bent out of shape over it. It's just rediculous because these are games that are rated for adults and sometimes they may have adult subjects involved. I'm just going on pricipal here because I've seen it so much lately. Get a grip people, these kinds of things are on television and in movies everyday and no one says anything but you put it in a video game and suddenly we've gone too far and mabey we should shy away from these subjects.

Even think about it from a realistic point of view, look at The last of us is an up and coming post appocalyptic setting. In real life if this sort of thing were to happen you bet your bottom dollar things like rape and pillaging and all sorts of other horrible things are going to happen but if they put it in the game I'm sure there would be a line of people waiting to chastise ND for it. It's just stupid that people want to focus on one type of violence and say you can't talk about it or include it in your story without an army of people getting offended but all the other types of violence are ok because its just make believe.

What do you know, another complaint from Kotaku.

Rape is pretty taboo for games, kind of like black v white racism. Probably should just steer clear of the topic.

Question does rape happen on the story at some point because that's understandable it's a story things happen, I just want to make sure it isn't the main character involved. Someone please let me know.

Hmm
I wouldn't have purchased the game if I knew about a rape scene prior to. I don't agree with showing that crap.
violents  +   573d ago
they dont actually show anyone being raped they just say that they are going to. It is merely being implied just like in the whole tomb raider rape thing. Its just people latching on to one subject completely out of context and then trying to chastise the game maker for it.

Hmm
Good to know. I haven't played up to that part yet. I thought they meant straight out rape scene. I'm not one of those that just says flat out it shouldn't be in video games period, it's just not for me. It's funny when you think about how people function. Senseless killing by the droves is fine but if you say one thing about my momma were gonna fight. lol.

It's a story....make believe....just like movies, books etc.
I'd understand if the game was aimed at children but it's not, it's an adult game with adult themes so does it really matter if there is a darker side to the story?
violents  +   573d ago
I totally agree. If you want a realistic story especially for a game like this your going to have to put in some tru grit kind of stuff once in a while. In the part of the world this is supposed to be taking place stuff like selling people into the sex slave trade is an everyday occurance and the game maker shouldn't be condemned for making reference to events that can actually happen.
