The Potential Good and Bad of Valve’s Steam Box

Alien Lion writes:

If you are one of those fans who feel like Valve is on our side, you must get a sense of vindictive gratification in the fact that they are planning to release their own ‘console’ next year. I’ve got to give it to you: this generation, the existing console-makers have really stretched the limits of how far they can push gamers in their fight for our dollar. It seems like each day some asshole thinks up a new way to charge us more money for less content, and we’ve had to either comply or spring for a good PC and move our business to the less noob-friendly gaming scene. Welp, starting next year, that option will become a lot more accessible and it will also crawl out of the basement right into our living rooms, aiming for that spot where the ‘nintendo’ should be. Is that good or bad? Let’s look at the effects the potential success of the ‘Steam Box’ can have on console gaming: (Industry, Next-Gen, Steam, Valve)

Yea fee online, no stupid adds in ever corner, no ugly cluttered up interface, no $40,000 fee to games, and a better keyboard for controllers! Oh how I love the flower wheel:)

I'm really exited about Valves console and I think it will be much better than Microsofts console because they're just greedy and all into entertainment leaving the gamers last! At least valve is a true and great gaming company who cares about their gamers.

Your comment seems like an attack at MS rather than an evaluation of the Steam box to me...

Coz MIcrosoft and Valve are basically the same, Sony/Nintendo on the other hand has a lot of first party studios
The_Infected  +   736d ago
It's both. Sorry I'm just exited to get away from Xbox I don't really like Playstation but I've always liked Steam just could never build an expensive PC nor did I want to I just really think a standardized valve console would giver everyone a great experience.

"The cheapest Sony HDMI cable is $25. That’s twenty five (real) American dollars. That’s a HDMI cable that doesn’t also work as jumper cables or anything; just a fucking cable"

You don't have to buy a Sony one. There are other cables by other people you can already buy

Thats kinda the point. Thats what makes the price ridiculous.

I recently started gaming on PC and I have instantly fallen in love with Valve. I WILL support this Steam Box and it will be my primary source of gaming if they continue to treat their customers the way they do.

The pro's for me are instantly wrapped up with the service I will recieve. I have to pay for LIVE, Downloadable games are overpriced on console stores and heck, the EU Sony store is horrible.

The only negative is the fact I already have a PC. However, the PC is downstairs so the Steam Box would be a perfect addition to my bedroom.

You can tell this site is HEAVILY pro-console and anti PC just by how many negative votes people are getting for saying they like Steam and the idea of this box.

With all the things Valve has done over the years, people should be rejoicing. They're not a publicly traded company so they aren't driven by pure profit for shareholders. They go after value and service and in return, people support them like no other company on PC.

Just look at the sales they have every few months on Steam. The prices are ridiculous. It's almost impossible NOT to buy a handful of games. And every single one of their first party games has been critically loved. HL, Portal, TF2, Counter Strike, Left 4 Dead...everything they release is gold. It just takes a long time for them to release it.

Having Valve enter the gaming market can only be seen as a good thing. It will provide more options and added competition which will increase quality and lower costs. Anyone who is against this doesn't know what they're talking about.

What I am worried about is how slow Valve gets things done & the terrible copy/paste customer support.

Besides that I expect:

lower game prices
more gamepad support
a new pc gamepad
new valve exclusives
hdtv friendly pc experience
gaming on linux

Yea, their customer support is horrid. I really hate giving props to origin for anything but at least you can get them to call you almost instantaneously after typing your phone number into the system on the site.

Steam email customer support that takes days has cost me even games once. I remember during a steam summer sale I wanted to buy bad company 2 for 2 friends. There were no gift options at the time and after logging into one friends account and paying with my card, I ran into issues with the 2nd friends account.

Not to say that isn't justified and I am actually glad they did it. Still it prevented me from buying that on sale when I had the money in hand to do it. So I emailed them about the mistake. Three days later I get a response, a day too late. So I ask if I can still buy it for the sale price since the only thing preventing me from doing so was the customer service reply time. Another few days go by only to receive a email telling me that it wasn't possible...

Other than that though, I love steam. I got rid of my 360 and ps3 awhile back when times were rough. Figured I would just stick to my pc and wait for the next gen but if "steam box" comes out before then, I will def be looking into it.

With this steam box it's safe to assume that HL3 could be a PC /steam box exclusive
