GDC: Emotion in Games a Distant Dream?

Joe Keiser of Next-Gen.Biz writes: Braid Developer Jonathan Blow thinks that games have a long, long way to go before they can elicit emotion from their storytelling, and goes off on games that aren't a good enough job.

"Half-Life 2: Episode 2 is just as robotic and lifeless a game as any first person shooter that came out in 1998. It just looks better," says Blow, as he discusses his excitement and subsequent disappointment at how Valve used its character technology. In his session, Inverting the Design Perspective, Blow states plainly that he thinks we're far away from solving the issue of emotional storytelling in games, that the problem is extremely hard to solve, and that a lot of current attempts at solving the issue are way off base.

Shadow of the Colossus...

The Wander and the girl
your only companion, Agro
big world and only you and your horse
killing "innocent" colossus
the ending!

Emotion in games is reality and games are art!
Thanks Team ICO!

In comparison to some of the Final Fantasy games.

Final Fantasy 7 was beloved because of how the story and characters made people feel. That was a PS1 game from over 10 years ago.

Final Fantasy X is also very good and emotional.

So this guy couldn't be anymore wrong.

NO_PUDding5901d ago

FF is good, but I think it is a silly comparison, they are evry different

Shadow of the Colossus will be special to me, in the way FF will be special to you. But I have to say, artistic direction in SotC is head and shoulders above FF. Thats alwasy been about technical art direction, where as thats where SotC deviated massively for me.

Eitehr way, we know this guy is wrogn,a nd both agmes are emotional.

Golden Axe is a great game I enjoyed it on the SMS, Genesis and in the arcade. Great game but it truly was a quarter eater back in the day. I wish Sega could get the rights to the arcade port of Moonwalker another great arcade game I enjoyed. Collect so many monkeys and become Robo Michael lol.

70 percent of devs unsure of live-service games sustainability

With so many games fighting for players' attention and interest losing out over time, time sink games are at risk of eventually losing steam.

It was worrisome to begin with.

It's a niche genre with only a handful of hits that can stand the test of time.

I like the sound of that!! I will for sure never support these gaas games.
Sony must be shocked at gamer's reaction, making them cancel a few of these and hopefully go back to the good heavy hitters they had us used to..
now bring on that PSPro reveal and show us some SP 1st party awesomeness.

What’s to be unsure of!? Look at the ratio of success to failure!

DarXyde10h ago

It's pretty ridiculous.

Imagine having a breadth of data at your disposal to see the statistically low success rate of these games, only to be laser focused on the exceptional case studies.

Yes. Stop all the live service bs.

Only a few will catch on. You need a perfect storm to be successful in GaaS and a bit of luck on top of that. But a potential cash cow will keep them trying and some will go out of business because of it.

Helldivers 2 manages just fine…

Keep production costs low… don’t just make custscenes until the mechanics and enemies are perfected first.

Make so much content that you can drip extra content for years, and the game already feels complete without them.

Most importantly: make weapons, enemies, levels, and mechanics that will stand the test of 1000 hours. This might require more devs embracing procedurally generated leveled, which I think separates Helldivers 2 from Destiny’s repetitiveness.
