RipTen | The Walking Dead Shambles to the Top of 2012′s Best

If you deny that The Walking Dead is a game, then you have to follow the thread back to Zork, Hunt the Wumpus, Colossal Cave Adventure and Mystery Mansion. All were released before 1980. In other words, rejecting Telltale’s masterpiece a place in the pantheon of honorees is tantamount to tearing down the foundation of our hobby. (PC, PS3, The Walking Dead: Episode 1 "A New Day", The Walking Dead: Season 2 - Episode 1 "All That Remains", Xbox 360)

The Walking Dead games definitely deserve the acclaim they have been getting. People who dismiss them as "not a game" obviously have a very limited understanding of what gaming is about.

I guess the counter-argument to the 'game' part of this discussion would be to say 'I don't count text adventures as games either.' Ralph Koster would go even farther and say that single-player games aren't games at all, sticking closely to a particular definition of the word 'game' that demands interaction from multiple people as a necessary element.

Since this isn't quite the place to start a debate on the medium's nomenclature- which should be fixed- I think the criticism stems from people not feeling as if they have player agency.

Very glad to hear about all the great buzz surrounding the series. It really took me by surprise, and while it may not end up as my personal GotY, I think it easily deserves all the discussion and praise it has and will (hopefully) continue to receive in the coming weeks.
