Talking Point: Time for Wii U to Treat Us Like Adults

This week has brought us an interesting story about Wii U eShop restrictions that are limited to European consoles, but perhaps provide greater insight into the relationship between gamers and their new Nintendo systems. It came to light that what was initially thought to be a botched parental control issue on the platform was actually a deliberate policy, limiting downloads of 18-rated games to four hours a day — they can be accessed between the hours of 11pm and 3am. This disregards the submitted age on your Nintendo Network ID and the Parental Control settings — even if you have them all disabled — on the system.

Nintendo Life looks at this policy, how it affects gamers and its wider implications. (Assassin's Creed III, Industry, Nintendo, Wii U, ZombiU)

the wii u or nintendo doesnt have to do a thing. you as an adult or person of free will have the option to buy a wii u or not to buy it.

i would never buy a nintendo console to be my main gaming machine nor would i buy it to game on occassionally. when will people see and learn about nintendos silly over-protective tactics and realize its meant for children and casual gamers.im a core gamer that likes to play familiar franchises and new ips that ahe standards tech advanced. i dont make excuses about what i like or want and nintendos path doesnt lead to my likes. there might be a few core games but they are tech inferior to the standards im use to so nintendo isnt an option.i know fanatics love to talk about owning all systems so they can play all games but im an adult who dont have time for a console posing as a core machine nor do i have time to game all day like some. nintendos machine as a core gaming device is a waste.

there are a lot of restrictions when it comes to nintendo consoles and games. some fans deal with it for the sake of playing exclusives and nostalgia. nes fa natics spin every negative about nintendo and lie to people and themselves for silly reasons. ask a nes fanatic what are the 5 most beautiful games graphically on a console this gen and you will start hearing a bunch of lies like "mario galaxy, conduit, and all sorts of rubbish just because they dont want to indicate that the playstation 3 is more powerful.

Oh get off your high horse. Plenty of "core gamers" love what Nintendo is offering. I'm 27 years old, have been gaming my whole life, and am surely not "casual." But even just the lure of the New Super Mario Bros. Wii U game has me wanting that new system. And I love my Wii.

And guess what? I love my PS3 too. I don't understand why you think liking PS3 means you have to hate Nintendo. Can't you just enjoy "gaming" ?

I also think its funny you rip "casual" gamers but then say you're an adult who doesn't have time to game all the time. Doesn't that make you "casual" ?

The whole "casual" vs. "hardcore" gamer thing is stupid and pointless. As are the "console wars." But if you can't even acknowledge that Nintendo continues to be relevant in the gaming industry than you are just foolish.

"The whole "casual" vs. "hardcore" gamer thing is stupid and pointless." I agree. The term Casual keep being used for social and other games which are similar. Yet the people who use them spends hours of their life playing them. If you ask me that sounds pretty hardcore

Well said. I like Sony and Nintendo almost equally. I don't see the point in limiting my self to one system as each console offers games I like. Its no different from when I used to alternate between Sega and Nintendo consoles in the 90s. I didn't go around saying Sonic was more hardcore than Mario I simply played them both.

So it's negative for Nintendo that Germany has laws?

Sure I think the laws are asinine, but they ARE law.

I guess you want Sony and MS execs to go to jail for you.

Sorry businessman don't go to jail, just ask the SEC.

What's fanatical is people like you see a COUNTRY restriction, and lay blame on Nintendo. Since their EU division is run out of Germany, that division is subject to Germany's laws.

What's the best looking games last gen? They weren't on the PS3 or 360, they were on the PC. True they were usually on 360 and/or PS3, but the PC version was always superior.

You can be an adult and have all the consoles and a PC. Usually people that do that ARE adults as not many kids can get their parents to buy all the consoles.

There's plenty of time to play video games, after all you probably could have beaten a couple of games just from the time you spent here. So you choose to not have a Wii U and deem it not worthy to waste your precious time on. Well ALL video games is 'time wasting', and what you choose to waste it on is nothing more than a 'preference', not a fact.

I never owned a Wii, or a Gamecube. But as a proud owner of a PS3, 360, Wii U, and an i7 920 @ 4ghz and a GTX 670, there are plenty of ways I can game, I actually do play a lot of games at 1080p (and have for years).

The funny thing is, it's not even a big deal really. How often are people buying games? So buy it during that window, or pick up a copy in the store, and play it whenever you like.

Every time i buy a nintendo console, im left with nothing but regret.. They have some cool games here n there but in between those games, MONTHs go by with nothing to play.. 1-2 decent 3rd party titles for my 3ds & theres still no zelda or metroid in sight.. Im really losing my patience with them & will sell all things nintendo that i own if i dont see any changes within the nx yr or so.. Ill give em til E3 to show me whats coming.. If i see all casual & kiddy games as their exclusives, im done with em...
