Metal Gear Rising Used to be a Stealth Action Game Before Platinum’s Involvement

PSM3 recently interviewed two of the developers behind Platinum Game’s controversial adopted baby Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, where they spoke in depth about MGR:R along with the culture surrounding the Platinum and Kojima studios.

In the interview Platinum Games’ director Kenji Saito commented on how the company strayed from Kojima studio’s original more stealth based gameplay. (Dev, Industry, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

Eh, I'm excited for Revengeance as a Platinum Games title, not a Metal Gear game.
Obnoxious_Informer  +   652d ago
I think that's the right approach. I'm optimistic thinking of it as a good n gory action title ala God of War rather than a Metal Gear.

Platinum Games is best thing happened to MGR .

You know what else it used to be? CANCELLED!

I like this direction, never had a problem with it, and if you really just want stealth, now you have Ground Zeroes to look forward to. Seriously, go back and watch the scene where Raiden fights all the Gekkos in act two. You'll wonder why you ever thought stealth would be involved in this game.

Yeah, we all knew it was at least a Metal Gear game. Now that overrated Platinum Games has it, it has turned into nothing but a mediocre hack & slash on an attempt to cash-in on the Metal Gear name instead of actually being a Metal Gear game.

Mediocre hack and slash? With the father of modern hack and slash at the helm I think not! Devil May Cry and Bayonetta have the best gameplay in h&s and MGR will be just as good.

the father of the modern hack and slash at the helm, so why does he say on twitter he has no involvement in the game? =)

I was once like you... I still think Platinum Games are highly overrated, I don't see why people think Bayonetta is so great, I think Vanquish is the only good game Platinum have released so far but... Rising is really cool and blade mode adds an extra dynamic. It's all about powering up to slow down time and make those precision cuts to enemies.

If you haven't played the demo, I suggest you check it out.

The hack and slash action suits Raiden a lot better than stealth. It's in good hands with Platinum games, they won me over with Vanquish.

Contextually, it was a good move. Raiden, as we saw him in MGS4, isn't a stealth type guy like Snake, he's a fucking Rambo with swords that takes multiple Geckos upfront and eats them for breakfast.

I see nothing wrong with this approach. This game is now called Metal Gear RISING, not SOLID, and there lies the differentiation that can justify the change in gameplay. It's like they're now two completely separate series contained within the same universe, and accordingly, they play differently. Kinda like what Nintendo does with the Mario universe, as in, Mario & Luigi =/= Mario Galaxy. One is a RPG, the other a platformer, although they share the same motif.

*********MGS4 SPOILERS**********

The thing that I don't understand is that I read somewhere that Rising takes place AFTER the events of MGS4. How can it be so and still feature a cyborg Raiden, when we saw him back to normal human form at the end of MGS4?

Rising does take place after MGS4, around 4 years after and there hasnt been full explaination on that spoiler topic you wrote, but Kojima did say that it will be explained in the game. Also Kojima said himself the game was not his idea in the first place, and he always said he did not think stealth fit in the game with Raiden. You can read more about the game and see what kojima said under 'plot'

At the end, he's still a cyborg, it's just a fake skin body.

Raiden and stealth is like water and oil-They don't mix.
CaitSith  +   652d ago
If talking about MGS2 Raiden, however...
zeeman  +   652d ago
I am a stealth fan. Not that I don't respect what raiden has brought to the fore.

Hack and slash just doesn't appeal to me especially with the amount of them that are out there.

He is also a cyborg Ninja. Ninja is stealth they are supposed too ghost in and do their thing and poof they gone.

1st metal gear series game I have no interest in getting day 1.

Way to go platinum... I wouldn't be surprised if this game does bad at retail.
ZBlacktt  +   652d ago
There should not even be Metal Gear in the name. Because it is not that either. A Metal Gear game is and will always be about Snakes.
bunfighterii  +   652d ago
This was already widely reported when when it was announced that Platinum were taking over development. It was going to be cancelled but instead Kojima handed it over to them.
dkgshiz  +   652d ago
Going to pass on this one. The only hack and slash games I ever really got into were God of War games. Its just my personal taste. If this were a true stealth based Metal Gear game it would be a no brainier.
hard joe  +   652d ago
raiden is not suited for stealth with the flashy lightning. gray fox is way to go for stealth.
isarai  +   652d ago
Yeah, but it was also a money pit causing them to bleed money like crazy, just wasn't working out with the dev team, and was going to ultimate just be thrown away, at least this way we at least get to see the finished product, even if it is altered
Der_Kommandant  +   652d ago
The game is in good hands, now Capcom... if you kindly give DMC franchise to Platinum.
SAE  +   652d ago
I prefer the origin version , the graphics and gameplay felt really really interesting and origin just like mirror edge , but i still like this version too , i hope kojima take it back and do his thing with it after this one released , we lost something special and unique to get another ninja gaiden , but im still excited for this :)

If it was going to be like Dishonored, that would have been so badass. Do we really need another Bayonetta?
