"This Generation" Part I - Meaningless Rewards - ACE

In this multi-part feature, the writer takes a look at hallmarks of "this generation" of games and consoles. This article focuses on the rise of Meaningless Rewards, like Achievement Points and Trophies.

"For curb stomping 100 enemies, winning a string of races, web slinging for a mile, completing an NHL season, finishing a game on the highest difficulty setting, or killing the population of Willamette, a familiar ding would (and still does) occur and the "Achievement Unlocked" logo would display at the bottom of the screen." (Microsoft, PC, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360)

Blah blah blah. The author's just jelly 'cause he can't get a platinum trophy or 1000G.

Haven't we been through this already like a 1000 times?

What's wrong with these article authors? If trophies/achievements are so "meaningless", then why on earth are they summoning meaningless, generic and definitely overdone articles - one day they'll realise no-one gives a flying fudge about their opinion on trophies/achievements; heck, they don't hinder games at all, if anything they add more to it. If you don't like 'em then don't go looking for 'em - simple. It's almost like these authors are looking for something to trash on because they've ran out of useful content to write an article about. Slow news day?

Did either of you read the article for the context? Or did you just read the synopsis above?

@JJRivers,

I don't see a point in giving a hit to an opinion piece if the title and synopsis are written in a flamebait manner.

Everybody knows that even though trophies don't make your life significantly better, there is some value to them for people who find pleasure in gaining them. Also we all know they push most people to try stuff they maybe wouldn't even think of doing without trophies. As long as the gamer doesn't make them more important than the game itself, trophies are a good thing.

We have discussed this over and over too many times. I don't care what the article actually says if the title and synopsis are written as flamebait. I won't give them a hit.

I think you missed the thrust of the article. (At least IMO.) When people look back at this generation of consoles/games, achievement points will be one of those signposts that people point to to recognize this gen.

To classify them as "meaningless" is just asking for attention, what may be meaningless to them is meaningful to others, all these pathetic articles act as if people are forced to collect trophies/achievement when it's quite the opposite. I've read the article, it's riddled with malice and grief to those who collect such achievements; "sorrowful regret when you look in the mirror." - really?

Does this ignorant author have nothing better to write about other than slander something so miniscule and harmless within the gaming industry? I don't see any reason why this type of article or should I say articles even exist - unless they've got a vendetta against achievements/trophies; which would be my assumption(pretty sad if they do).

I don't think the phrase "If you've got nothing nice to say, Don't say anything AT ALL" got through to this author, it's of most relevance.
