PlayStation Plus Trailer: Get 45 games free with a one year sub

GamingBolt: Playstation Plus is an awesome investment especially if you are looking to build a game collection. It features new and niche games and also amazing ones like Batman: Arkham City and Vanquish, and when you consider the amount of value it offers, it’s no surprise that it grown 290% for Sony since it was introduced.

just don't understand how Sony can afford to give so many games away? is it a plan to grow now and make money later?

admiralvic4156d ago

Actually, it's not as bad / hard to afford as you might think.

For starters, a big part of plus is to get people to buy hardware for their PS3. Naturally PSN sounds like a better program than XBL (Please, lets not argue about the service quality, discount rate and anything of the like...), since the online is free and plus gives "free" games. This is especially true for the Vita, since many people adopted it during black friday and increased profit for memory card purchases. (4 gb can hold the games, but not most of the current Vita offerings)

Besides the profit from hardware, Sony probably pays VERY little for these games. (Little being in the grand scheme) Like most of their retail lineup has been older games (of various quality), which could have been bought for cheap.

I bought Batman Arkham City 8 months ago for $15.
Bulletstorm was down to $5 dollars a few times.
You can score the full GOTY edition of Borderlands for $20, which has hit $10 or less too. (like during a preorder deal)
Bioshock 2 can easily be obtained for $15 and the collectors edition could have been bought for $8 dollars. (BF last year and Xbox only)
Biohazard 5 Gold Edition has also been down in the $10 - $20 dollar range for a while too.
You could have easily bought Dead Space 2 Collectors Edition for $20 and or the Limited Edition (includes extraction) for that too.

I can keep going, but I think you can see the point... these games are long past their "prime" and hold little to no value. Especially because many of them got GOTY editions with all the DLC included. Since most companies have accepted that these titles don't pack much of a punch anymore, they let Sony give them and hope this results in additional DLC purchases or future support. This should be obvious, since many of the titles have upcoming sequels or were released just before the sequel.

Borderlands 2, Biohazard 6, Dead Space 3, Bioshock Infinite, Crysis 3, etc.

Finally, many companies actually APPROACH Sony to be part of plus in some way. I've heard Keli didn't meet sales expectations for Shank 2, so they tried to make back some cash by giving Sony the rights to give it for plus. Other companies like Tozai Games used it as a way to be relevant again, so they offered all the upcoming DLC + the game at a discounted price for plus. Sure Spelunker is worth more than $5 dollars, but they probably made a good chunk of cash over the repeated mentions on the blog and gaming news sites spreading the word.

So to sum it up, Playstation Plus is basically designed to build their user base and allow companies to easily market their games after they've lost value. It's really a win, win, win, since it's a program where virtually everyone comes out ahead.

@admiralvic

do you work in marketing by any chance? because that was very well detailed, a bubble for intelligent.

MikeMyers4156d ago (Edited 4156d ago )

They can afford to because most of those games have already gone through their selling ability. You are less likely to see games like Gran Turismo 5 for the first year or longer because they continue to sell well long after they are released.

It's the same sort of concept for Netflix. Most of those movies are older titles that don't hold as much value through retail.

Godchild10204156d ago

Thanks to Playstation Plus, I can spend more time gaming, than complaining.

mister_zolos4156d ago

if you have a ps3 and psvita you will fill like a boss. damn i love ps+

TheLastGuardian4156d ago

Yeah, FILL up that hard drive and memory card space with more free games than you can handle.

I think PS+ is worth the price for LittleBigPlanet 2 alone. I've sunk over 300 hours into it mostly just from playing user created levels. It's easily my favorite game of this generation.

I love how Sony treats their consumers like gold. Ever since i became a plus member i have been enjoying a wide selection of great games. With the most recent one being Vanquish which i will play once im done downloading it.

P.S I also downloaded Limbo which at first i thought that i wasn´t going to like it but in the end i find it to be a very enjoyable title even though its a bit sadistic.

@GODCHILD 1020

Thank god i didn´t buy crisis 2 at launch because if i did i would be complaining about how i wasted 60€ on a horrible game.

zgoldenlionz4156d ago

Vanquish is a great game, I hope you enjoy!

tigertron4156d ago

It really is a great deal. Unfortunately I don't have the time to play them all at once. I have a massive backlog of games i.e. Batman Arkham City, Borderlands, Just Cause 2, Crysis 2, Ratchet and Clank All 4 One. Thanks Sony. :P

If only we'd get games for being XBL subscribers...Microsoft - take note!

Rolling the Dice: Do Modern RPGs Miss the Point of Team-Based Play?

It seems it was long time ago. A bunch of friends spending hours on end playing RPG games, sitting around the table with the box of cold pizza. Excited about the story, listening to the Game Master, they were completely engaged in the worlds only visible to them and their imaginations.

The GM is the programmer, and in MMOs and co-ops, you can play with others. If you want to ONLY use your imagination for the visuals, read a book.

1) Hope they put it on disc this time.
2) Hope this is a positive for Neptune coming over as well.

Demons Souls5068d ago

If so, that's being developed & published by Idea Factory. Compile Heart has nothing to do with it (Thank God for that).

Godmars2905068d ago (Edited 5068d ago )

Thought Compile Heart was one of the companies lending characters.

Was also speaking in general as in regards to a US of Neptune. If these guys are offing a second game, NIS or Atlus, both of whom offer quirkier titles, will put that one out.

@kagon01:
My issue isn't - wholly - with the DL-only option, but the price. The first game should be $30. Maybe $40, and by that I mean $39.99. The only reason its $45 is the 360 disc version which has extras. Nevermind that by all rights its a PS2 game. Something that proabbly could have been done if the devs had the GOW2 engine or tools.

ClownBelt5068d ago

I approve of this god damn message.

Could have gotten my 60 bucks if they just put it on a disc.

Another exclusive damnn the ps3 keeps on rollin wit games awesome ;)

Jack-Pyro5068d ago

Is this a half decent SRPG, porn aside, cause if it is, i might just decide to go and buy it for the 360.

Anon73495068d ago

There's no porn just some sexual innuendos but that's it.

Also it is a great game by itself, maybe not graphically but everything else is top tier.

RedDevils5067d ago

so it had some kind of "top tier" porn story jk

ThanatosDMC5068d ago

Yup, it's a decent game. I just hate that a move has to go first before any attack options.
