Leaked Footage of Cancelled Streets of Rage Remake Hits the Internet

SPOnG: "Gameplay footage of a proposed Streets of Rage "re-imagining" has been leaked on the internet. The project was being developed by Ruffian Games and apparently pitched to SEGA as a downloadable title before it was cancelled." (Dev, PC, PS3, Ruffian Games, Sega, Xbox 360)

as much as i like the franchise, i think this would have hit the bargain-bin pretty quickly.
Stuart5756  +   195d ago
"pitched to SEGA as a downloadable title", 500-1000 buys at best. Would've crashed and burned!
SleazyChimp  +   195d ago
Looked pretty damn cool to me, maybe not finished. They said it was a psn/xbla game, so it would of only been $15 bucks at most. Already a bargain.
otherZinc  +   195d ago
This would be a DAY 1 Purchase for me!
This looked very good!
soljah  +   195d ago
just give me the original soundtrack music on it. i would buy for that alone.

needs to be 9.99 or lower on psn
ConstipatedGorilla  +   195d ago
I would have bought it in a second. That looked amazing. The enemies seemed a bit dumb, but it looked really fun. What a shame it's cancelled.
CarlosX360  +   195d ago
I also thought that looked good. The combat could've bee a little bit more smoother, but other than that, it looks good.

Unfortunately I agree

Thanks to Ruffian Games' Gaz Liddo for setting the gaming world on fire again. SOR gamers came out to voice their opinion.

SOR is still alive and kicking in gamers' hearts. Old and new!

Come on, Sega what are you trying to do?

Sega should learn how to take care of their games like Nintendo does and not suck them up dry like Sonic.

A high quality Mario or Zelda game once every generation of 4 years is better than 4 Sonic games that sucked!
Haven't you learned this all these years, Sega?

I am both glad and sad these prototypes got cancelled because they are not the spiritual successor to SOR.

SOR needs AAA treatment like the first 3 games.
With AAA talent like Yuzo Koshiro & Sega WOW or get the Ryuga Gotoku Yakuza Team to lend a hand.

Sega of America was responsible for axing Yuzo Koshiro's SOR4 Dreamcast pitch!
http://www.youtube.com/watc...

1 SOR, SOR2 &SOR3 are big budget AAA Sega exclusive games
2 They were designed for fast paced arcade gaming action using the Golden Axe Engine & Design by Sega AM7(now Sega WOW)
3 SOR games placed heavy emphasis on cutting edge music production and sound design courtesy of Yuzo Koshiro
4 SOR games have heavy emphasis on visual art design by Ayane Koshiro

Sega WOW & the Koshiro's are still working for Sega.
They must be involved in producing the next SOR with any third party developer to pull this difficult task off.

Even Bandai is rebooting Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 with all the original staff and voice actors.

Axel & Blaze should have made it to Sonic Racing Transformed, Sega! What in the world are you doing?

Sega get your act together!

Sega fans make better games than Sega because the fans put their heart in to it not just their minds.

I hope Sega gets tired of losing money and decided to do a proper AAA SOR Sequel, remake or prequel whatsoever.

What? It looked pretty good to me. For a downloadable title anyway.
Dovahkiin  +   195d ago
It's streets of rage, that alone deserves my money.
Drewminati  +   195d ago
big fan big fan, Although they should of left it in 2d,

i would of been part of that 1000 buys

love street of rage
ricochetmg  +   195d ago
I like the idea also. Game play looks kinda boring.
guitarded77  +   195d ago
It's a brawler through and through. Very repetitive, but great for local co-op with a friend.
MarkusMcNugen  +   194d ago
Lets not forget it was a pitch, not a finished title. A lot of unfinished games look boring, but could have been something great.
Chrono  +   195d ago
Why not 2.5D?
CarlosX360  +   195d ago
I thought this is what they're trying to go after? It looks 2.5D to me.

I really love these in-game "Stage 1 Start" and "<Go" dialogs. Looked really good, and fits into the SoR feel.
THamm  +   195d ago
Yes like StreetFighter 4 style graphics, would have been awesome, I can imagine those graphics with a constant up-close flow to the game...
isarai  +   195d ago
WHAT?! WTF are you smoking blue-flowers and Stuart5756? this looked excellent!! Especially for a downloadable title that wasn't even in full production yet. I love how they kept many things from the old game, just with their own style, that dude at the end is that knife bastard(very first miniboss from SoR1) but with a different style, it's like SoR from an alternate dimension or some shit, and the combat looked fun even though it was unfinished. Sad to see it didn't make it, i would have loved to see what they could have done if they got the green light.
Warj  +   195d ago
I'd love to see this or any other streets of rage game become a reality. However, the video shown (while pretty) didn't really make me feel confident about the combat. Yes, it looked deeper than past games, but it also looked slower, like I would have had issues with poor responsiveness. Hopefully, I would have been wrong though, but unfortunately, we may never find out.
Tonester925  +   195d ago
This is what happened to the Def Jam fighting games. Def Jam Fight for New York was a masterpiece. Fighting was smooth and action packed. Then Def Jam Icon came out and it was all graphics and weak gameplay.
ninjagoat  +   195d ago
Would have mad a great PSN are Xbox Arcade title. Cant see why they held back on this :/.
Nawert  +   195d ago
I am waiting on a Fighting Force remake. Please two player co-op.
galgor  +   195d ago
Cool intro, but I'd rather have it 2D like Double Dragon Neon. Classic gameplay wins!
dennett316  +   195d ago
Looked a little bit clunky in terms of the combat. I'd rather they did a 2D or 2.5D title with big, well animated sprites/models. Make it widescreen HD, have the same sound effects and music as SoR 2 and simply bump up the available moves and characters.

The unofficial remake from Bomber games was very good - same sprites with rejigged levels etc.
hadouken007  +   195d ago
Loved me some streets of rage back in Da day,I'd Love a remake. I'd buy it.

ye that was abomination i wouldnt mind a 2D continuation
BlackIceJoe  +   195d ago
This looks great! I would have gladly bought this. I hope Sega changes their mind and allows for a new Streets of Rage game.
Braid  +   195d ago
What a shame, it actually looks good. I'd buy the game just for the old-school gameplay, which allows you and your friend to grab two controllers and sit in front of your TV, to beat the hell out of bad dudes. That'd be a good party/friend night game.
Mkai28  +   195d ago
Just make an HD remake, Hire some good artist, with remixed soundtrack and make it 4 players. We deserve that for mania difficulty:)
chukamachine  +   195d ago
Should have gone to psn/live for £4.99
e-p-ayeaH  +   195d ago
Looks great but i think it should be named something else than Streets Of Rage because the gameplay should be 2D not 3D.

Probably it got canceled because the budget for it was a little higher than expected just make 2D w/ functional gameplay and long well designed stages w/ great soundtrack same thing for sonic games.

Sega really doesn't need a big budget to make great games they just need to be great so that people get interested on them.

there is no sound? or is it just me
CarlosX360  +   195d ago
Yeah, no sound.
JeepGamer  +   195d ago
The beat em up genre was mostly lost in the 2D to 3D jump unfortunately.
younghavok  +   195d ago
Hell yeah i wouldve bought that, it reminded me of fighting force but with better graphics. Throw in the streets of rage soundtrack and Axel? Day one buy. Hell I still run streets of rage 2 on my Wii and play till those continues run out. Beat em ups are typically good fun, pick up and play, titles.
sonicsidewinder  +   195d ago
It 'looked' good.

'Looked' the like it had the basics of play at least.

Who's to say it would have actually been good though?

If it means sega is holding onto it for something better, then great. If not, no sleep lost, got SOR 1&2 right here.
miyamoto  +   195d ago
What can I say ...
because this news is both good and bad on many aspects...

Streets of Rage, known in Japan as Bare Knuckle: Ikari no Tekken (ベア・ナックル 怒りの鉄拳 lit. "Bare Knuckle: Furious Iron Fist"?), is a side-scrolling beat 'em up released by Sega in 1991 for the Sega Mega Drive.

Sega WOW & the Koshiro's are still working for Sega they must be involved in producing the next SOR with any third party developer to pull this difficult task off.

SOR is in production as a scheduled non-profit feature film for release on October 30th 2013.

To be honest I never thought that a 3D SoR would work. But this looks freaking awesome. Wish they wouldn't have cancelled it.

To all the SoR fans check out Streets of Rage Remake. SEGA shut it down but you can still find it somewhere.
Unztayble  +   194d ago
Thanks for the heads up. I downloaded it and was playing it using my PS3 controller. Can't believe it took them 8 years to remake it. And they built it from the ground up. They weren't just copying and pasting sprites. They remade EVERYTHING! Everyone, go find it and play it.
cleft5  +   194d ago
Streets of Rage is easily one of the best series on the Sega Genesis. Not remaking this game is a travesty and just another incredibly poor decision on Sega's part. Decision like this is why that company is in such poor financial shape.
kupomogli  +   194d ago
I thought it looked really good. Sega should start a Kickstarter to see whether or not they should complete this. They already have something to show off that there has been work to the game already.

Set like a minimum amount that they have to achieve for it to be released, and put that everyone who atleast donates $5.00 or $10.00 will get a PSN or XBL live code once the game is released if they reach their goal.
