Playstation Vita Doom & Gloom talk will stop once the price is dropped

The Playstation Vita, Sony's successor to the Playstation Portable. It's a handheld device bursting with functionality. In theory, the system has a great many things going for it. It has the best graphical capability among the handheld gaming devices as well as some functions that even its Playstation 3 big brother doesn't have ( ex. Cross Game Chat). However, for all the great potential it has, there has been one single detrement to the system's possible rise to greatness, the price. (Industry, Mobile, PS Vita, Sony)

We wish. Vita doom and gloom won't stop until there's another Sony product coming to market for these sites to fixate on. We've already seen PS4 doom articles popping up and just weathered a spat of Wii-U doom. When we get closer to the PS4's launch and more is revealed, only then will the Vita doom talk stop, to be replaced with PS4 doom. It's sad that this is the current state of game journalism.

In game journalism, the old saying "You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar," has been replaced with "You can catch more flies with crap."

We have seen PS4/720 doom and gloom articles already. I'm sure it won't stop, because they will find something about the revision yo complain about or compare it to how it's doing in XX year of the ame time of the 3DS.
Nitrowolf2  +   597d ago
It will never stop
we are in 2012, 6 years after the PS3 launched and we are still getting "PS3 Doomed" "Xbox 360 Dommed" articles. Like wtf, 6 years people
CraigandDayDay  +   597d ago
It Won't Stop, unfortunately
Sadly, no it won't stop. The PS3 has had several price drops and, yet, the doom and gloom still remains. It's just something Sony has had to deal with this generation for some reason. Had they come out toe to toe with MS this generation and came out the same time and at the same pricepoint, the PS3 would probably have been 5-10 million ahead of the 360 and we wouldn't have heard all of this negative doom and gloom Sony talk.

Oh well, though. I just tune it out myself. I buy the consoles that suit me best, and those are the ones with tons of exclusive games and free online and free access to paid-for subscription services like Netflix (no paying a subscription to access my already paid-for subscription). The PS3 fits the bill. And the Vita is a great handheld. I don't have enough reason for one myself but if I had time for it, I'd be buying it over the 3DS, if for no other reason except for Cross-Play and Cross-Buy.
GribbleGrunger  +   598d ago
The doom and gloom articles for the Vita will never stop. They'll just be replaced with made up stories of how Sony said they'd eventually outsell the 3DS... and I'm sure those articles will be able to use the words 'doom' and 'gloom' in those articles too. :)
MikeMyers  +   597d ago
The negativity will never stop but the doom and gloom articles may if Vita can gain some momentum.

The truth is negativity sells. It creates reactions within the forums. I personally don't let it bother me because I see it as a materialistic product that can easily be replaced by something else if that product does not live up to the potential. Yes the doom and gloom articles get redundant after awhile but I'm not about to lose sleep over it. The fact is if you enjoy that product why should you care all that much about what others think to the point of letting it bother you?
admiralvic  +   597d ago
They won't stop because everyone seems to think we're in the highlander... If you're not #1, then you're failing. Additionally, these articles write themselves...

Take a vague idea. (Vita sucks)
Grab trivial market data. (Low sales)
Frame it improperly. (No one wants it)
and you have a very easy to justify article, since all the "facts" are on your side.

With this being said, there ARE some respectable sites that don't resort to this stuff, but sadly no one down votes and we're in turn constantly subjected to the two of the lowest subjects in "game journalism".

____ is dead and My article is justified by being a counter to those articles.
doogiebear  +   597d ago
Dude I bought a Vita on Black Friday. Because I had PS+ for the last 2 years, I had been accumulating 56 PS mini's, 19 PS One games, AND I just recently got 3 PSP games and 8 Vita games (and a year of "unlimited music") thanks to PS Plus.

SO, I have a total of 86 games on DAY ONE of getting my Vita. So, Sony's ingenious plan of including PS Plus to Vita WILL INDEFINATELY attract MANY PS3 owners to get a Vita. That sir is 70 million people. If just 1/4 of PS3 owners get this amazing deal, then YES, the Vita is about to make the biggest come back in gaming history.

And just 2 weeks ago, I was saying the PS Vita was doomed. Now with PS plus and my back catalog of 80+ games that I never knew I had until now, I can now say that I am a firm believer in the Vita's staying power.
doogiebear  +   597d ago
ALSO, believe it or not, I can still fit all of these games onto a 32 GB memory card (amazingly). And still have room for firmware updates, and saved music files from "Music Unlimited's" offline music saving function. I haven't been this excited about a console since I heard PS2 had backwards compatibility!

And with PS plus, I'm guaranteed about 6 new games PER MONTH (3 for Vita/PSP/PS1 and 3 for PS3) AND Unlimited access to millions of Music/songs for a year via "Music Unlimited" (which can be kept and saved to listen to on my phone, even when offline).

All the while, I got my Vita bundle for only $179 (White Vita with Assassins Creed 3 Liberation, Playstation All-Stars, 3 additional months of PS+, and a 4 GB card (sold the worthless 4GB card for a 32 Gb).

ALL THIS FOR $179 (plus the cost of 32GB card, Music Unlimited, and protection screen). With an additional guarantee of 6 FREE games per month for PS plus. I wont need to buy another game again (I'm only going to pay for Persona 4 Golden, until I can save up for more games)!

THIS WAS THE DEAL OF THE CENTURY!!!! I feel bad for anyone who didn't get that Amazon Bundle.

Here's the list of all my games for Vita on day 1:

-Valkyria Chronicles 2 (last week had a bundle sale w/ all DLC for half the price of game alone)
--Playstation All-Stars (free with Amazon Bundle)
-Uncharted (VITA)
-FF Tactics (psp)
-Jet Set Radio HD (Vita)
-Persona 4 Golden (purchased; all other games from ps+)
-Blobs Attack (VITA)
-Gravity Rush (VITA)
-Wipeout 2048 (vita)
-Legend of Mana (ps1)
-Sound Shapes (vita, free from getting ps3 version)
-Crash Bandicoot 1,2,3
-Harvest Moon ps1
-Legend of Dragoon
-Breath of Fire 4
-Alundra
-Oddworld ps1
-Theme Hospital
-Umjammer Lammy
-Disgaea 1 (psp)
-Castlevania SOTN
-Castlevania Chronicles
-Silent Hill (ps1)
-Resident Evil
-Resident Evil 2
-Resident Evil 3
-Final Fantasy 5
-FF 7
-Spyro 1, 2, 3
-ALSO, 56 PS MINI GAMES!!!! (YES, 56!)
-AND A YEAR OF "MUSIC UNLIMITED" FOR ME AND MY WIFE!!! MILLIONS OF SONGS!!!!

Im a huge fan of FPS/TPS and a person that really loves RPG's but dislikes JRPG's.
Im also a person who dislikes playing rehashes/Sequels/spinoffs of existing games, and even less inclined to buy a new system to play before mentioned rehashes/sequels/spinnoffs.

Well im sorry to have to say that your list is really unappealing to me. Im sure lots of those games are great, just not for me.
profgerbik  +   597d ago
LOL last statement was too perfect. I can't agree more with you about how you feel about journalism these days.
PopRocks359  +   597d ago
That's doubtful. People cried foul about the 3DS when its price dropped as well, and the Vita was initially being sold at a loss.

The doom and gloom articles really won't stop (as others have already stated), people are too hungry for attention and clicks.
DragonKnight  +   597d ago
For the billionth time, the Vita IS NOT EXPENSIVE! Just because Nintendo couldn't justify their incremental upgrade to the DS with the 3DS and charge $250 for crap DOES NOT mean that that's the same situation for the Vita. The memory cards are expensive, true, but the unit itself couldn't be more affordable for the buttload of features and tech you get.

Why the hell are the media so so stupid? Even if they are bloggers, they are making those people who are trying to get going in the gaming media a very bad name by being so stupid.
cpayne93  +   597d ago
Got my Vita on Black Friday and I don't regret it one bit. Plus is an incredible deal, it's worth getting a Vita right now just for that.
PopRocks359  +   597d ago
The Vita has a number of the same features as the 3DS. In fact, I'd say the 3G is a colossal rip-off due to the uselessness of the 3G feature and its long term cost.

It isn't fair to knock Nintendo's hardware when there is some great content on the 3DS and (in my opinion) not so much on the Vita right now.

Couple this with a starting price of $250+ and the memory cards and you have to question the investment if you're not a diehard Sony fan.

@DragonKnight below

"There are plenty of great games on the Vita."

The 3G marks an ENTIRELY different box with a different price tag. How can you possibly ignore it?

Really. Outside of Gravity Rush there isn't really anything I want to play on the Vita that I can't already play on my PS3.

"And no, you don't have to question the investment. The only reason to question the investment is if you can look at the entirety of what the Vita offers and be brain dead."

Man, and people say my defense of Nintendo is extreme.

So I'm brain dead for questioning whether not I want to blow $250+ on one game? Are you for real? Could it not simply be that I don't have the same interests as you and don't want to make the same investment?

The memory cards are absolutely required to run the Vita and save games unlike the 3DS so you HAVE to factor that into the price tag.

I'm NOT saying you cannot pick on Nintendo. I'm saying you cannot declare the 3DS and Vita as dead. You're singling out the 3DS for problems that some (like myself) may have with the Vita on a practical and personal level. That to me is the real double standard here.

"Honestly. The B.S. gaming media and stupid tactics of the worst game publishers/developers have seriously twisted people's concepts of value and quality."

Newsflash buddy, the media attacks Nintendo aplenty as well. The amount of doom articles for the 3DS a year ago and the Wii U the past few months is rather daunting.

The Vita also has a lot of features the 3DS doesn't have, the 3G feature doesn't even factor into the equation thanks to it being an optional feature.

It isn't fair to knock Nintendo's hardware but it is fair to compare the Vita to the 3DS? Specious reasoning. And the content (meaning games) literally has nothing to do with what makes up the 3DS' hardware and why Nintendo had to reduce the price. Plus, as you have stated, worthwhile content is subjective. There are plenty of great games on the Vita. People who say there isn't either don't like games, or are choosing to ignore fact.

And no, you don't have to question the investment. The only reason to question the investment is if you can look at the entirety of what the Vita offers and be brain dead. This isn't even about fanboyism in any way, it's simple logic. The Vita is inexpensive for everything it offers and can offer. The memory cards are ridiculously overpriced but apparently people are unable to make a distinction between the two so they just lump it all into one and think that that's ok. People compare the Vita to the 3DS but it's not fair to pick on Nintendo? Cop out, double standards, pick your terms to define this kind of crap mentality.

Honestly. The B.S. gaming media and stupid tactics of the worst game publishers/developers have seriously twisted people's concepts of value and quality.
DragonKnight  +   597d ago
May as well waste my last bubble on my reply to your edit.

"The 3G marks an ENTIRELY different box with a different price tag. How can you possibly ignore it?"

Gee, maybe because it's an option? Maybe because that's a tacky way to argue the price of the Vita by conveniently looking at the more expensive of the 2 versions. I guess we can say the Wii U's premium version is too expensive as well given useless "upgrades" to the base model right?

"Really. Outside of Gravity Rush there isn't really anything I want to play on the Vita that I can't already play on my PS3."

Good for you. Doesn't mean the Vita lacks content. Your lack of interest is completely irrelevant and doesn't negate the fact that the Vita has great games. You don't want to play them? Fine. Don't pretend that that's a big deal or anything.

"So I'm brain dead for questioning whether not I want to blow $250+ on one game? Are you for real? Could it not simply be that I don't have the same interests as you and don't want to make the same investment?"

And now you're putting words in my post and trying to switch around the topic. One is brain dead if one thinks that $250 is too expensive for everything the Vita offers on the hardware and in the content currently available and upcoming. Just because YOU don't want it, doesn't make it expensive or any less of a value. Again, too many people have twisted sense of value and quality if they really believe the Vita is too expensive for what it offers.

"The memory cards are absolutely required to run the Vita and save games unlike the 3DS so you HAVE to factor that into the price tag."

Actually no, you don't. Although true that the memory cards are required for SOME games, they are not and will not be required for ALL games. And as they are sold separately, it's not fair to add the price of a memory card onto the price of the hardware unless you want to start calling the 3DS expensive thanks to random accessory A or replacement part B.

"I'm NOT saying you cannot pick on Nintendo. I'm saying you cannot declare the 3DS and Vita as dead. You're singling out the 3DS for problems that some (like myself) may have with the Vita on a practical and personal level. That to me is the real double standard here."

Where did I say the 3DS is dead? In what way beyond pointing out the pointless and unfair comparison between the two devices did I mention anything about the 3DS? You clearly don't understand the real double standard, as you would know that the only time the Vita became expensive wasn't until after Nintendo lowered the 3DS' price. Before that everything was great.

"Newsflash buddy, the media attacks Nintendo aplenty as well. The amount of doom articles for the 3DS a year ago and the Wii U the past few months is rather daunting."

That has absolutely nothing to do with what you were quoting. Fact is, if you can't see that everything that Vita offers SHOULD be MORE expensive and isn't, then you really don't understand value. The 3DS was attacked because it's an incremental upgrade that was originally priced at a premium it didn't earn. The Wii U is being attacked pretty much for the same thing. Nintendo believes they can keep using the same tricks and get away with it forever. Some of what is said on all sides is true, much is not true, but one thing that is certainly not true is "The Vita is too expensive."
profgerbik  +   597d ago
I agree, it has tons of features packed into a little device people don't realize how well the Vita is actually made also compared to a 3DS which is mainly plastic on top of being cut down lacking so many features.

The Vita is worth every penny it truly is, it definitely hurts Sony bad people are so stupid and just can't find out for themselves instead they just listen to what everyone else says.

I think it also has to do with most kids or people in general have a lick of an idea of what they even buy, they assume it's good only because they were told it is, or they assume it's bad just because that is what people say.

You can't live life like that but sadly that is how the majority lives on the daily basis spending money on things they literally don't even understand fully or even know what actually is inside their devices hardware wise.

Makes me sad people don't want to know what they spend their money on..

*cough iphones..*

I didn't care that much about black friday because I am still completely fine with the $250 I spent on such a nice handheld.. The best handheld there is at the time really.

You seriously can't even buy most android phones that offer as much and can literally do as much as the Vita can.

For example 2 years ago I actually bought some cheap android phone as I didn't know any better but it cost me $349.99, the Huawei Ascend.

I can't stress how much of a piece of crap that phone is.. single core processor, 3.2mp camera that looks far worse than the Vita's 1.2mp.. how I don't know.. but it's awful.. it's slow as shit and can barely play Angry Birds for god sakes..

I mean and people complain about the price of the Vita? I know the value of the electronics I buy, the only reason I got ripped on that phone was because I honestly never cared to have a smart phone and I truly didn't care that much too look into them but I paid the price for not knowing which is kind of my entire point but I know better now and own a GS3 which is literally all I would ever need in a phone.

Like literally I will never replace the GS3. Point being though people don't realize the Vita is not expensive by any means.

I mean I am still upset with the fact I was one of those people who actually bought the 3DS at $250, I returned it immediately after I realized I spent way too much on something that basically plays N64 games.

Once it priced dropped five months later, I picked it up for the hell of it but seriously it was never worth anywhere near $250 but you never saw people complain that much about it.. like they have the Vita which is actually worth the price, I can see where all the money went. When I bought the 3DS for that much clearly I couldn't as to why I returned it after 3 days of using it.. I had all the release titles also..

Whatever let the fools be fools.

Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, Kingdom Hearts 3D, Resident Evil Revelations, Metal Gear 3 and Code of Princess are hardly Nintendo 64 games.

Not to mention the ten NES games and the ten GBA games you would have been able to download for free had you not sold the 3DS so quickly.

It's the human condition to bitch and whine. Even more so to attack something because you have a different view (3DS VS Vita). It's disgusting and I'm personally sick of it, pertaining to video games or otherwise. Everyone grow the hell up and accept each other. Also, be a little positive about the Vita. It's beautiful on the inside and out.

Edit: and the price point? Just stop talking about it. Not even major corporations can afford to sell at a loss. It has a 10 year life cycle and Sony WILL support it. They may make mistakes but in the end they haven't dropped the ball with any console yet. Especially given it has a ten year life span, things will start to pick up in the next year or two. I personally don't even think they need to, though, just need more third party developer support. Other than that people should bite the bullet and pick one up for the current price. If that's too much for you then hunt around for a cheaper bundle.

I agree. If people had the games they want... They will pay the current price. Look how much consoles sold for when they first hit. Get the games and people will come.
KangarooSam  +   597d ago
Except the Vita already has a TON of great games. I've probably bought around 7-10 and plus added 4 more to my collection.

Then you have to realize a Sony rep a few months ago promised plenty of exciting game announcements for the Vita soon. And we were promised a Bioshock (although I feel they're holding out until more units are sold). And we know for a FACT that Rockstar is working on MULTIPLE Vita games.

What more do the masses want? With these alone it's incredible and guaranteed to get more third party support. Plus you know Sony will give us a God of War game or two. inFamous will most likely happen, and we're gonna be getting new and fresh ideas like Soul Sacrifice and Tearaway.

People need to wake up and see that the Vita's potential is already being grasped by a plethora of sources.

It's a promising future.
DarkZane  +   597d ago
Yes, the price of the Vita is a problem, but in my opinion, the price of memory cards is a bigger problem.

100$ for 32GB is far too much. Divide that price by 3 and you'd be on mark. Same for the rest of them. Also, take out anything 4GB or below, it's far too small these days, especially if you have PS plus.
Thirty3Three  +   597d ago
It's not even expensive.
Just because the 3DS is much cheaper now, doesn't make this system 'expensive'. You realize the PSP launched at this price and got pretty much no complaints, correct?

The price complainers are just being ignorant...

I blame three things: Facebook, The Kardashians, and robot chicken...

Lol
Jokes aside one thing will end the VITAS doom talk and that's a price drop. We've seen this time and time again 3ds yep, xbox360 yup, ps3 at 600$ a pop at launch, hell yes! All stopped when the price drop happened.. Take the 3ds... Prime example, before the drop all kinds of doom talk. then bam! Price drop really early in its life span. It doesn't get many games, what has come out for it this season????!! Nothing worth mentioning. I love and own a 3ds but no bullshit nothing has come out compared to the vita. But no hate articles for 3ds. I actually spent more money on vita games and own more vita games than my 3ds. So its really not the games per-say its that price. The vita is worth is price but its still costing as much as a ps3, and that's not good. When the price drop comes no more doom talk.
But then it'll be the wiiU's turn... again. then the xbox720/PS4 and so on. It's dumb, all the negativity but its not going any where. For every logical person theirs an idiot just waiting for the next hate article to spew dumb irrelevant topics on the net.... Smh
