Is the Wii U really sold out everywhere?

Nintendo would like you to think that the Wii U is sold out "essentially everywhere" as Reggie says but is this really true? (Nintendo, Wii U)

I was at Walmart, Target, Gamestop, Kmart this weekend and they had Nada. I was told by two of the stores they will get more in, but not sure when yet, or how many...I was not there for a Wii U, I was just curious. Just now I looked at Target online they have the Basic Wii U with NSMB2 for $359 available online right now, all of the others are sold out.

I see 'now in stock' signs everywhere especially gamestop in southern California.

Gamestop online has it too for normal msrp if anyone wants one.

That is where I live. I was all over Santa Clarita (Close to Magic Mountain) this weekend and just looked for fun(I have one already) I honestly did not see one. Like I said above though I did see it online at Target, but basic only.

The Basic console seems to be at least more readily available. Obviously stores are going to get shipments in from time to time, but those will be flying off the shelves, especially leading up to xmas.

They are going to be a big ticket item for sure, with the Deluxe being almost impossible to find.

I went to Sams Club on Saturday and they had 5 WiiU's, so there's stock at some places here and there.

But also the question is, how soon after will those be gone?

It's like whack-a-mole. Some places get them, and then they're gone. Rinse and repeat.

I bought my 360 and PS3 both a couple of days after xmas the launch year. For the 360, I actually was in the store with a friend for some reason, and happen to just walk by and see it in stock. A couple hours later I went back and picked one up. The PS3 I called, not expecting them to have it, just got lucky, and they did.

What the author doesn't understand, is that this is the case with ALL consoles.

The shipment comes in, they don't call anyone, and people stumble upon them or call and see it's in stock and race up there to get it.

So no, in a real sense, it's never sold out, as I can guarantee you that there is one sitting on the shelf somewhere in America or now Europe. But of course it's essentially sold out, because most places are out.

Seeing how they were 'sold out' yet then sold another 200k the next week while still preparing for the European launch means to me they are shipping small batches to stores fairly regularly.

It's probably a small amount like 6 consoles per shipment, but they are coming. (and I use 6 because when I got my PS3, that's what the guy told me they received, so it's probably pretty similar).

Maybe it's replenished once a week, or twice a week. People see it's not there and decide to wait a week before calling again, but by that time it may have gotten another shipment in and sold out, etc.

It's probably also best to find areas where the demographics or location are against people buying such systems like places where there's lots of retirement communities. Or places where they might be an abundance of a particular chain in an area. Sometimes you can find areas where there might be a couple of best buys within a mile or two of each other. Other places like Wal*Mart, Target, or whatever might be in your area.

Also probably good to look at the lower density areas of the cities, or basically the outskirts. Where everyone has to come from one direction rather than all around, and the further away from the main population, the less foot traffic the store will generally see, and less likely someone will want to drive across town or away from their normal places to pick one up. Of course many people will go above and beyond, but it does knock out 50 or so percent of the demand. Who knows the actual number, just alot of people aren't willing to wait in line or drive 40 miles round trip to get one.

You make some good points, and I think you're spot on about stores getting small batches of shipments. I imagine that Sams store probably had it's stock replished, because it was the only Sam's store in the city I was in.

When I went there, the WiiU's weren't in the Video Game section, they were sitting out on a table in plain sight near the front of the store, so I couldn't help but see them. Given the limited availability of WiiU's across the U.S., they probably won't last long there.

i have a bunch at my toys r us we have like 6 in each color and white ones take a week or more to sell but black take 1-2 days.

I don't think so. The Wii U being 'sold out' depends more on the city and store than the region as a whole, I believe. You could say that there is a shortage, though. Unless it's readily available to everyone everywhere then it won't reach its full sales potential even if some stores have it in stock.
