I'm loving this game, havent even done a lot of the main missions (although I need to so I can unlock more skills) just because the world is so well done. Lots of side missions, some are repetitive others are interesting, but in all i look forward to each one, especially the journey to each objective as anything can happen. Also the two islands are huge, haven't even done half of the first island.

Is this like The Elder Scrolls games where you can just ignore the main story and explore the world?

yes, there are hunting challenges, races, assassination etc... style missions, then you can craft things by hunting animals. You can learn more about the island by exploring caves or temples etc...

I would recommend some main missions as some cool skills are only unlocked by doing them eg: grabbing an enemies knife and throwing it at someone close by or unpinning a grenade on an enemy and then kicking them into a bunch of enemies- good times.

Mmm, I don't think it is like TES. The game has an open world and side quests, but the side quests don't offer narrative angles that are quite as sophisticated as the main quest, contrary to Elder Scrolls where sidequests have a good deal of context.
Sidequests here rely mostly on the strength of the core gameplay mechanics. You hunt stuff, you race, you capture enemy bases.
The main narrative thread likely is a much more essential component to FC3's campaign than to Oblivion or Skyrim.

He never asked if it was like TES in terms of narrative or anything, he asked in terms of ignoring the main story and doing other things that you as the player want to do.
