The Lund Report: Black Friday 2012 NPD

Jordan Lund analyzes the sales numbers coming from Black Friday in the US.

Excerpt: "In terms of raw unit sales, Nintendo takes the top spot for the holiday by pressing 4 unique and distinct product lines, selling a grand total of 1,225,000 pieces of hardware. The bad news for Mario is that, in their heyday, both the Wii and Nintendo DS would have exceeded that total number each on their own. November 2009 for example saw the Wii sell 1.25 million and the NDS move 1.7 million. Dropping to just 300,000 and 275,000 respectively is a huge downward slide. Wii U sales might have been limited to stock on hand, but it’s also 200,000 units less than the Wii sell-out in 2006. Shy of the higher price, it seems like Nintendo simply made fewer Wii U machines to avoid being left with stock on hand."

How long until they get sued and it gets taken down? I say a month or 2

PRIMORDUS10h ago

Sued for what? It's just an emulator no ROMs are with it. ROMs are easy to get anyway, but with iPhone you can't just copy and paste like Android unless it's jail broken I think. Anyway Nintendo should be more concerned with their ROMs up to torrent for years for all of their concoles, but then again they can't do nothing about it, they never will and I love it. 🤣

As long as it isn't emulating the Switch, it'll be fine.

RonnySins8h ago

Naaah! Don't want to waste time emulating on iPhone.

Won't belong before Nintendo bangs on Apple's door to have the emu removed. Like I say you take down one six more take it's place. Problem is people are putting emu's on such stupid platforms. The good emus are the ones not on stupid platforms like a red target. The good emu's are word of mouth and keep a low profile.

It was worrisome to begin with.

It's a niche genre with only a handful of hits that can stand the test of time.

Cacabunga16h ago

I like the sound of that!! I will for sure never support these gaas games.
Sony must be shocked at gamer's reaction, making them cancel a few of these and hopefully go back to the good heavy hitters they had us used to..
now bring on that PSPro reveal and show us some SP 1st party awesomeness.

What’s to be unsure of!? Look at the ratio of success to failure!

DarXyde20h ago

It's pretty ridiculous.

Imagine having a breadth of data at your disposal to see the statistically low success rate of these games, only to be laser focused on the exceptional case studies.

Yes. Stop all the live service bs.

Only a few will catch on. You need a perfect storm to be successful in GaaS and a bit of luck on top of that. But a potential cash cow will keep them trying and some will go out of business because of it.

Helldivers 2 manages just fine…

Keep production costs low… don’t just make custscenes until the mechanics and enemies are perfected first.

Make so much content that you can drip extra content for years, and the game already feels complete without them.

Most importantly: make weapons, enemies, levels, and mechanics that will stand the test of 1000 hours. This might require more devs embracing procedurally generated leveled, which I think separates Helldivers 2 from Destiny’s repetitiveness.
