Sony U.S. Shares Rise on PS3, Blu-ray Optimism

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. shares of Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research)(SNE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) rose as much as 5 percent on Tuesday on optimism about sales of its PlayStation 3 video game consoles and Blu-ray DVD players after Toshiba Corp (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research) pulled the plug on its rival HD DVD system.

Sony's PS3 machine has a built-in Blu-ray disc player, the dominant high-definition home movie disc technology now that Toshiba has conceded defeat.

And so it begins. The momentum that is to come with the discontinuation of HD DVD. Analysts are already predicting an increase for Sony and their products mainly the PS3.

The PS3 is at #8 with no major releases or price drops.

** Ooops I mean #7***
It atleast shows people are much more interested now.

Blu-Rays inevitable win helped push me to get a PS3 earlier this month (to go with my spiffy HDTV).

Someone explain that.

Oh, it's $50 bucks. I guess that explains it.

ps3 is now the ps2.

watch how many it sells in these next coming months.

i bet you it outsells 360 in NA, again.

Blackmoses3832d ago

after todays news from Toshiba, I think that Sony is ready to reclaim its rightful spot back on top. I think beating the 360 in sales is just about a given right about now. This news coupled with the game releases they have projected for this year should just about do it. Don't get me wrong the 360 is still in it till the next version of the system comes out, but they need to do something to save face.

If they couldn't increase their lead when they had the likes of BIOSHOCK, GEARS, Mass Effect and not to mention HALO 3 hit all within the same year (pretty much), while Sony had very little to offer. Then how are they gonna do it when Sony has this much going for them now?

Not a fanboy just a gamer...
but you gotta admit they really need to do something!!!

couldn`t agree more.

they need to come up w/ something quick.

or this will be over in a few short months.

like i said before the ps3 is now the ps2.

but more capable.
