I think this guy is a loon. Storytelling in video games is fantastic. I don't want to sit there and get high every time I want to take part in a story because it's a psychedelic pipe dream.
I've enjoyed videogame stories more than movies the past couple years. Telltale's 'The Walking Dead' was great for example, and I enjoyed all of Mass Effect up until part three's pre-Leviathan/extended cut finale.
The list goes on...
I read Shawn's Q&A, I just don't understand his "everyone's dumb but me" angle, at a keynote no less. Everything's "horrible" and "crap", something about corporations and NP hard problems. Comes across a bit of a pretentious hipster. *shrugs*
agreed story's in video games are starting outshine books, films and tv. i understand this guys comment that in most games you should be free to create your own story. but on the other hand a preset story's with choice's that affect that story along the way have been my best interactive experiences
This makes him sound kinda pretentious imo, to dismiss an entire mediums efforts in storytelling just because he doesn't like the stories they tell. Anyway, it's not like the story in Dyad was something better.
So, like fez, Dyad is a game I'll now be avoiding. Not that the game is bad, but when the guy behind it is so full of himself, there's NO reason for me to give him my money.
He didn't even have any good reasons. Just, "It's impossible. You can't do it that way. X game tried it, and it was horrible. My game does it better, but I can't tell you the story, cuz there's no text!"
Yeah, okay. I can explain the story in Journey, and there's no text in that, either.
Seems more like he sucks at it, so he's gonna avoid it, try to come up with some other way to do it, and in the meanwhile claim everybody else sucks.
The guy comes across as kind of a douche, but some of his comments are spot on. When compared with books or film, the vast majority of video game stories are pretty shit. As much as I love Mass Effect, if a book had been written exactly the same as the game, I would have put it down without finishing.

Not worth my time.
