An Update On PlanetSide 2, Is It Pay-To-Win?

Moarpowah's Laevatein writes: "[Y]ou may recall me talking about free-to-play games and the pay-to-win elephant in the room. Though I talked about PlanetSide 2 almost extensively in that article, I wasn’t able to determine whether or not PlanetSide 2 was pay-to-win or not. Well, rest assured, I can give you a clearer answer on that now. With that, I believe it’s time to drop into the hot zone that is PlanetSide 2." (PC, Planetside 2)

I'm not weighing in on the Pay to Win argument, but I'm not sure I agree with some of the conclusions of the article.

It may take 2500 kills or 50,000 healing ticks to get the certs needed... But I suspect that healing 50,000 ticks would take about as long as killing 2500 enemy for an average player? (Not played Planetside 2 yet, so only speculating).

I'm not arguing that the numbers seem high, but developers have to make a profit. And if I'm having fun in a game, and it is well designed, then Pay to Win is not a facotr even if it exists.

I played a lot of the original Planetside, and there were people who used some very basic weaponry in their loadouts and yet were lethal.

Right now, paying members just get a head-start towards unlocks, so it isn't that bid of a deal.

Later on however, I think the system is going to discourage new players.
Newcomers will be surrounded by higher ranked players who have superior equipment (not to mention familiarity with the game) and the only way the new player can have a fair chance would be grinding for a few hours or paying up.

Want to fight infantry? Well, almost everyone has better armour and weaponry than you.
Want to pilot? Well, almost everyone has better maneuverability than you, and they've got missiles while your plane only shoots bullets.

I think that might turn a lot of people off unless SOE does something.

This is my first planet side game and so far my biggest gripe is the air dominance in this game. Especially on my server Vanu controls the Sky's and just farms the masses of infantry on the ground cooking them up with a rockety death.

The AA launcher being 1000 certs was a big mistake this early in the game.
