Next-Gen PlayStation Network Features

The next PlayStation is almost here; with rumors putting it being revealed at 2013’s E3 and a possible Q4 2013/Q1 2014 release and with that a brand new list of features for PlayStation Network. The PSN has gone through some major changes since its initially launch on the PlayStation 3; to bringing itself on par with, if not above, the competition. Yet, we want more. Just packaging the same features of the current PSN and bringing them over to the next console won’t be enough.

Let’s take a look at three of the biggest features should be added to the PSN to make it truly the premier online gaming network in the industry. (Next-Gen, PS3)

Allow me to control the PS3 videos, xmb, and stuff with the cross control app while I am playing on my vita.

Would have been awesome the other day while I was watching sunday ticket and playing uncharted on my VITA. But instead I had to get up and walk over to my controller trhat was charging on that 3 foot cord.

Hopefully they revamp the psn, so we could change our psn ID's. It's only one of the most wanted features on psn.

Background downloads for game patches,I hate waiting for a patch to download when I could be playing another different game. Next gen consoles better have this feature.

Psn+ does that

No actually PS+ does auto downloads at night.

I think PS4 will do background patches like the Vita does. It's awesome! The Vita does a lot right that shows how PSN is going. I do think the PS4 will be more integrated and less compartmentalized. It's looking very good.

Exactly. VITA is a glimmer into the future. It shows which direction Sony is headed. Vita is a very powerful machine and it gets me excited cause I know the PS4 has something in store for next generation.

Two tiered system with both costing money, PSN plus will still have free games and discounts. Sony cant afford to give online away for free anymore, their losing out on hundreds of millions of dollars in revenues annually.

They can't start charging now as existing customers would be pissed but a new console sort of resets expectations. I'm guessing basic PSN will be half the price of live and PSN plus around the same price.

People can go to PC but on consoles you'll have to pay to play next gen IMO.

Your opinion is wrong. Free online is a huge draw for Sony. They could never get away with charging for it now.

Already, Nintendo has decided against charging for online play. With Sony already doing the same thing this generation, they're most likely to keep that model for the online next gen.

In fact, we're most likely to see Microsoft implement a free tier to their online to keep up with what the other two are offering.

But Sony charging for online? Not a chance.

Time will tell.

With no free online next gen console option Sony doesn't really risk losing customers. As long as PSN is notably cheaper, Sony will maintain an online price advantage.
