Nintendo should have killed off the DS a long time ago

Is the DS's presence in North America and strong hardware sales hurting the 3DS? Gimme Gimme Games argues that it has hurt Nintendo's 3D handheld and that Nintendo should have put the old handheld down months ago. (3DS, Nintendo, Nintendo DS)

Actually, the DS's presence shouldn't affect the 3DS. The DS still sells pretty well, so if the 3DS isn't selling, it's because consumers are looking at the 3DS and thinking "nope, it's not worth the extra $40". That's a problem with the 3DS, not the DS.

Case in point, the existence (and continued support) of the PS1 didn't slow down the PS2, nor did the PS2's existence (and continued support) slow down the PS3.

The DS is doing well because of it's low price of entry and the huge library of games. Just like why the PS2 still sells in Japan, or how the PSP usually on average does triple the sales of the Vita over in that market.

The 3DS is still selling incredibly well, and the install base continues to grow at a rapid rate.
