3DS getting permanent price drop in two weeks

A user over at the Cheap Ass Gamer forums has just posted a thread stating that the Nintendo 3DS will be getting a permanent price drop in two weeks time, just in time for Christmas. Though we cannot confirm the price drop as the user, htz, does not wish to reveal their source at this time. (3DS, Nintendo)

I'm sure Nintendo could afford to drop the 3DS price

Its made of early 80's cellphone parts, so yeah. And I'm not even sure if that's a joke or not.

Sony will have to. They already are going to drop it, but if nintendo does Drop # 2, before Sony does Price drop # 1......that isn't smart on Sony's part.

Good news but I hope they have a new version ready for next E3 to show off. I want a 3DS but something in the back of my brain is telling me to hold on a little more

....but I need Mario Kart...and Animal Crossing when it comes out :|

Vita :(. In order for Sony to compete, they will have to sell the vita at $180

They're not really aimed at the same demographics, much like the PSP and the DS. While there's certainly some overlap, watch the Vita ads. Sony isn't trying to compete with the 3DS. The 3DS is solidly aimed at the kid market, the youngest gamer in Vita ads appears to be in his early twenties.

It's like saying Porsche needs to lower their prices to compete with the Honda Civic. While they're both cars, they aren't targeting the same markets. They don't have to compete head to head on price.

That being said, there's no doubt the Vita would sell better if the price was lowered but there has to be a balance. The Vita is solid piece of technology. Obviously they can't just give em away.

Same thing with Nintendo. There's no doubt dropping the price will move more 3DS systems, but I didn't think the 3DS was doing badly considering it's up against half a billion smartphones/tablets. I just don't see this happening because I don't think it's necessary.

Yeah, both consoles are meant for different markets. If you want go play Mario on the go, you'll get a 3DS. If you want to play Persona 4 on the go, you'll get a Vita. If you want to do both, you can get both.

Thats VERY wrong, clearly you just beleive what you want. In Japan handhelds are more popular for adults and kids than consoles. Vita and 3ds are both aimed at anyone who wants games on the go. 3ds is for kids your saying, but its not supposed to be used by anyone under 7...

I dont think Vita and 3ds are aimed at different demographics at all. I could just as easily say that any handheld videogame, or any videogame, is primarily for children.

In my opinion Nintendo just makes games for everyone. mario, zelda, smash brothers may seem like kiddy games to you because they dont have guns and explosions or blood, but those games were made for everyone to enjoy and not just for kids. Tons of adults enjoy these "kiddy" nintendo games that certian fanboys keep mentioning.

Think about past nintendo games. Mario 3, mario world, super mario 64, starfox 64, zelda OoT. Those games were not Kiddy games, but made for everyone. Just like new super mario bros U, made for everyone. Just because some cool kid wants to say that game is for kids and doesnt have enough guns and explosions does not mean it is actually for kids.

nintendo makes games that are meant for enjoyment by everyone, MS and sony make games for kids and games for "adults" separately.

edit- I have a vita and not 3ds, dont want one. I just think its funny that suddenly the VITA isnt competing with 3ds just like it isnt competing with smart phones(it is competing with both directly and indirectly). If it has no competition shouldt it be doing better?

edit 2-- Id also should mention that the only 3ds adds I remember seeing were for nintendo games that are for adults and kids or adult games like that one with that singer girl playing brain training or whatever. Clearly there is a large push to get adults into the 3ds, especially in Japan.

Not true. CONTENT matters. The Vita has different content than the 3DS and vice versa. When making a gaming hardware purchase, content is most important. If a person isn't interested in Nintendo exclusives but they want to game on the go, why would they buy a 3DS?
Yodagamer  +   179d ago
@Logicwins, also if you want to play resident evil, monster hunter, kingdom hearts, pokemon, kid icarus, the 3ds already has other games than mario.
LOGICWINS  +   179d ago
"the 3ds alreadyhas othergames than mario."

Yeah. Never denied that.
Lionheart377  +   179d ago
This will force Sony to lower the Vita's price. Just needs to stay competitive.
LOGICWINS  +   179d ago
Vita has no competition, its in a league of its own. The same with 3DS. Both offer ENTIRELY different experiences.
PimpDaddy  +   179d ago
They both sell to consumers that like to game on the go. How are they not competitors? If you think the 3DS does not have so-called "hardcore" games then you need to go look again.

How are they different ENTIRELY???
LOGICWINS  +   179d ago
When did this argument become about "hardcore games"? What does that have to do with anything?

"They both sell to consumers that like to game on the go."

Both the IPAD and Samsung televisions sell to people who enjoy consuming media...are they competing?

The similarities between vita and 3ds is like the one between an iPad and a fricking TV?

Go home, logicwins, you're drunk.

3ds is gaming handheld, so does the vita. That's is their MAIN PURPOSE of use. What's so ENTIRLEY different between those in the grand scheme of things?

Would be great to see a price drop of $100
wingman32x  +   178d ago
I don't think this is going to happen personally. I can see another price drop, but I just can't see it drop that much. It's only been about a year since that huge slash.

I can only imagine the insane numbers a $140 3DS would pull in, though.
