Naming Your Crew: Emotional Attachment in XCOM and Beyond

FTL, XCOM, Worms Armageddon - all let you create your team in whatever image you'd like. But why? Through connection, relation, customisation and care these games make us feel something for AI even without the backstories befitting of Mass Effects or Left 4 Deads, and this is a good thing. A very good thing. (Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, FTL: Faster Than Light, PC, PS3, The Sims, Worms Armageddon, Xbox 360, XCOM: Enemy Unknown)
