OXCGN’s Wii U System Review: Is This Truly the Next Generation?

"This has been one of the most prolonged console generations in the history of video games.

While traditional generations have lasted anywhere from three to five years, this one technically began in 2005 with the release of the Xbox 360, and the other two consoles in 2006 and has lasted until where we currently are.

Now, Nintendo has followed in Microsoft’s footsteps and released the Wii U a year (or possibly even more) ahead of the competition.

Is this truly the next generation, or is Nintendo merely playing catch-up with a fancy controller?" (Wii U) 9/10

Really enjoying my Wii U. Good points about how the next gen will be more about the controllers than the tech... I want to play everything on my Wii U now but none of my friends have it :(

They might if you convinced them otherwise. I guess we'll have to wait for Metroid and Zelda, no?
PopRocks359  +   728d ago
Give it some time. A few of my friends said they'll get one once the new Smash Bros./Bayonetta 2/Nintendo core (Star Fox/F-Zero) games come out.

For now I'm just enjoying my games and Miiverse. Plus we have a long launch window ahead.
stragomccloud  +   728d ago
I'm really quite surprised by miiverse. I totally expected to ignore it.... but it seems to be a must have feature!
Man-E-Faces  +   728d ago
I was impressed with miiverse too at first but the novelty is wearing off with each day, why? Very rarely do I see posts with actual problems needing help in a game instead it's post after post of "I have this game on PS3/360 is WiiU's version any better" or posts with nothing more than crappy art and 1 liners describing the game. I don't thik this pattern will change either, never the less miiverse is something Nintendo did right with WiiU, my opinion of course.

the gamepad is the future.when you can play COD BOP's and watch the 49er's on sunday at the same time.well i don't know about you but that is one of the best features in a gaming system in a long time.now that's a two screen experience.take notes MS,sony why is my vita not supporting this! not just four games but try your're hole ps3 collection.and why hasn't my vita receive an update to be use as a controller? i think sony was the best system this gen but if they want to sell more vita's they need to come with more features that u don't need to buy to copy's of the game to use them, looking at you capcom.

I don't think people understand how helpful the tablet is for games that have inventory items, maps, etc.. ZombiU is a perfect example of how well it can work...

Right it's called the start, select or triangle button(or the xbox equivalent) on most games, you don't need a tablet controller for that.

If this is innovation, give me the same shit we have been using for the last 25-27 yrs. Why is dragon warriors/final fantasy's inventory or map screen suddenly a noteworthy feature of the wii u's tablet controller?

A menu/inventory screen isn't innovative or revolutionary, that or we are regressing back to the nes or prior, in regards to new gameplay ideas.

Nintendo sausage fest article, not a particularly surprising response.
"funny on the tablet I just drag it with my finger in 1 second"

So much better than taking less than a second to press a button.

And people wonder why nintendo games are still stuck in the early 90's, with you people as fans nintendo will always be a gen behind.

I guess simple minded people love their gimmicks, i personally would rather have a stronger cpu, dedicated Gddr3 or Gddr5 video memory. Instead of that crappy cheap ass ddr3 ram, which only gig is available for gaming.

But hey no matter how many corners nintendo cuts, you people will still lap it up and thank nintendo for gracing you with it's benevolent presence.

Enjoy everything being tied to your console and not the account like live/psn ect does. And people pretend nintendo isn't treated with kids gloves by gamers, your either blind or in denial.

I'm loving it! It took me a little while to get used to when I was playing AC:III but now that I am, I don't ever want to play it without the Gamepad again! Let me explain;

The Wii U plays EXACTLY the way I thought it would! I'm only going to explain the benefit for AC:III as that's the main game I've been playing so far. First off, the Wii U Gamepad... I am able to play AC:III entirely on the Gamepad, without any lag whatsoever! This is especially useful when I'm ready to relax before I go to bed and still be able to play my game; meanwhile, the Wii U is downstairs and my girlfriend is next to me in bed able to watch TV, EPIC! Next, I am able to play the game, with the ENTIRE HUD and map on the bottom screen, freeing up the beautiful over-world of AC without any clutter in the way (similarly to OOT on the 3DS). This feature alone is worth it for me, but Ubisoft and other developers, better let you fully customize hot-key's next time around, wasted opportunity... Finally (this one is crucial when battery-life enters the equation), The Gampad/Pro controller combination feature; this feature may not seem like much, but for gamers like me, it's a must! Let me explain... Once your battery starts to die on the Gamepad, your able to sit the Gamepad on the charging-dock in front of the television, pick up the 80/hr Wii U pro controller, and continue to use the second screen under the TV, and still take advantage of having two screens at once (Like a GIANT DS), which is a great idea. Once your charge is complete you can resume playing with the Gamepad and put the pro controller down because you still have 77hrs left on it.

I honestly love these small but extremely useful features and find it extremely hard to ever go back. Enjoy everyone!

I love ACIII on Wii U too. The fact that I can watch TV while doing side missions is great. I imagine I'll be completing a lot more games in a timely manner now.
ScubbaSteve  +   727d ago
If the side quests are so boring you'd rather watch TV then why not just skip them? I can't stand those games where you go around collecting the 100 hidden coins on the map. Ironically Assassin's Creed I is where I finally said screw it to those quests. Then again I don't care about trophies either so maybe it's just a different type of gamer who wants to do all those.
stragomccloud  +   727d ago
The problem is I'm a completionist. Asassin's Creed 1 is where I decided to give up on side quests too. However, the side quests are a lot more manageable in ACIII. That said, I'm an avid movie lover and it's hard for me to divide time between film and games. The Wii U is a good solution to my dilemma.

nintendo delivered big time with the wiiu....great system cant wait for more games.....haters will be haters though
jbgamer  +   727d ago
true but ignore the haters this is a grat time for nintendo, and I am enjoying my games, NINja Gaiden 3 razor's edge, zombi u, and Mario u... these are all great games, and I cannot wait for nintendo tvii, as well!!! I am going to enjoy my systems, sorry haters, we nintendo fans are allowed to have fun with our systems too.
nano88  +   727d ago
I love the system but mines froze 8 times :(
stragomccloud  +   727d ago
Mine froze 3 times. But then again it was during Assassin's Creed and that has happened to me several times on previous outings on my 360 and PS3.

Oh, it's kinda weird how you can't use the Wii remote to shut off the Wii U in Wii mode. It powers down, but the Wii U controller turns on. So I have to go back to the Wii U menu then turn it off.
BootHammer  +   727d ago
Great review and spot on! Amazing system with some killer launch apps. ZombiU and NSMU are two games you must own and that will no doubt sell you on this system. I see major potential in this system =)
MasterCornholio  +   727d ago
The Wii U does sound interesting but I will wait and see what Microsoft and Sony do with their next Gen systems before buying one. What I don't want to happen is that I jump into the Wii Us ecosystem and then I discover later on that its extremely underpowered compared to the competition.

Yes i got 2 copies of AC3 1 on xbox360 and wii u, there's a huge difference the wii u is graphically superior in every way and it's new features on the game pad is nothing i have ever seen brilliant.
