Kotaku: "Off-putting difficulty spikes and rigid performance demands overwhelm what should be an engrossing career mode and what is a richly illustrated tribute to Sega's greatest hits."
Wow, they gave it a "NO". That's surprising. Oh well, I enjoyed the demo and I bought it straight after. Getting it for Christmas Gotta be worth £25 for the limited edition right?
This is the only negative review I've seen for this game so far. Weird.
It's a good game, but I tend to agree with them.... the game gets way too hard, even on the medium difficulty setting.... I'm all for a challenge, but the hard level is ridiculous. Add in the fact that there are no advantageous shortcuts in the game at all, and it's a little disappointing. In addition, I agree with him on this point, I actually dread transforming into the boat and the plane... I personally prefer the classic levels where you stay in a kart the entire race..... I hope Mario Kart Wii U doesn't try and go for the 'transformation' angle like this game and Mario Kart 7 did... Guess I'm a purist when it comes to my kart racing...
Ha, even the comments section there all disagrees.
This is a brilliant and fun game, 90% of the public seem to think so, 90% of the gaming press think so, and obviously I think so. Kotaku has its head up its ass on this one. Sure it's hard on HARD and EXPERT difficulty, what do you expect. People have gotten far to used to instant gratification and hard modes being relativly easy. Im enjoying the challenge, ive gotten past every hard mission and I'm chipping away at expert. It's great it has that replayability and you feel great accomplishment when you finish something on the higher difficulties. Most sites are saying Mario Kart should take some ideas from this game and yet Kotaku say the opposite...what's up with that?
Well it's £10/£20 cheaper than most games depending where you get it from so I think it's worth the money for these minor negatives. I mean you're complaining that it's too hard? Just practise and get better. One of the biggest problems I have with games these days is that they're too easy, they're not built to challenge you and with most racing games they get too easy too quickly, after a few races you're an expert and never lose. This might finally be a proper challenge.
I get the impression the audience of these games attracts people expecting an easy ride. It was the same with modnation, people claimed getting 100% in campaign mode was virtually impossible, and that the AI cheated. Yes, the AI cheated (very banded) but if you're good at the game, it didn't really matter, it might have taken a few tries for each mission, but that's part of the fun. I imagine the difficulty spike here is similar. Besides, I don't know if you remember karting games of old, but N Oxides time trials on Crash Team Racing are insanely fast. To this day I still can't beat them all.
