Nintendo Warns Wii U Buyers About Damage During Software Updates

Nintendo Co. warned buyers of its new Wii U not to turn off the console while downloading a mandatory firmware update after some customers complained their devices were damaged during the process. (Industry, Nintendo, Wii U)

“It may take an hour or more to perform the system update,” the company said in an e-mail yesterday. “Powering off the console during the update may damage your system.” - Nintendo

I knew by common sense that turning off a console during a save, load, update etc could potentially harm the console on a software level, possibly corrupting or worst case scenario, bricking it. But PHYSICAL damage? That's a genuine new one on me.

If Wii U carries over the trend of either mandatory/optional installs on multiplatform games, then this could be a pretty big issue. It hasn't really been made clear if this is purely a Day 1 software update issue, or if ALL potential installs and software downloads can cause these issues.

If the latter is true, they could potentially have huge scale replacements to customers because everyone has to install something at least once even if it is only the initial firmware update.

I hope they manage to iron these teething problems out, i don't wish issues on anyone who wants to just enjoy their new platfrm =/

I didn't see any mention of physical damage in the article, just that it may damage the console.

That firmware potentially bricking the console is something they need to address. Theres nothing to stop me going out, buying a WiiU then not connecting it up to the internet and playing it for a few weeks. Then when i'm done, connect to internet, patch and switch the console off when its being applied...

'Hello Mr gamestore manager, my WiiU is f*cked, i'm not happy wheres my refund'

"Oh hey I'm bored of this updating, I know I'll turn off my console even though it warned me not to. What's the worst that can happen?" - 'Murica, fuck yeah!

Insinuating this only happens when people turn off the system when updating.

What about when the power goes out? Not the users fault.
What about when your cable company decides to do maintenance without warning? (happens to me all the time, fuck you Cox Communications!)

@OneAboveAll

Chances of the power going out when you're applying an update are slim, you're probably more likely to get kicked to death by a donkey on the way to work.

Also you can pull the plug on your internet at any point when you're downloading a patch/update. You only cancel the download, to my knowledge it doesn't patch on the fly during the download.

sadly someone will still do that

its no different than a sign that says "dont press the red button" and you know your going to press the red button to see what it does. luckily im not stupid enough to turn off a console during a software update.
better not trip over a plug or it's bricked.

I think ninty has trouble making software. If Ps3 gets plugged out it just starts over no brick ps3.

Even if windows is updating my 2007 laptop it just starts over when I turn it back on.

This is lame no?

Not everyone will be luck to have nothing go wrong.

it's 2012 this should have something to prevent this.

We do, it's called the guy who said his console bricked is a liar. It has been reported that if you turn off your console during the update when you turn it back on there will be a black screen seemingly bricked but it's actually updating, if you leave it like that for a while when it's complete it'll load up the OS. There is a chance it will damage the system just like there is a chance of the PS3 or your 2007 laptop having a problem if you switch it off during an update.

Turn your ps3 off while its installing updates or saving see what happens
Bathyj  +   509d ago
Why would you do that?

It clearly says not to.

I have, a few times. Unintentionally of course, my house runs on a key meter.

It was fine. Still is in fact.

This so silly. People need to realize that you can download the update in the background and play a game while it's downloading. You don't have to sit there like a retard and stare at the screen.
iamnsuperman  +   509d ago
I hear it isn't the obvious so people aren't going to do it. It's strange you would think Nintendo would have made it obvious that you can download it in the background

Wheres my email telling me not to stare directly at the sun or not poke crocodiles with a stick?

Does the Wii U get updated as it downloads the update of does it at least do the update first? It's not smart to do them at the same time if Nintendo is doing that. Not only would a power failure mess up your console but losing your Internet connection could too.
