Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse Review (Destructoid)

Jim Sterling writes: "Seth McFailin'. Reviewing Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse is difficult, because if I were to say it's bland, unfunny, and offensive, a large portion of the audience will fire back with, "Just like the show!" Meanwhile, another portion will suggest that I find the game vile simply because I don't like the cartoon it's based on.

Neither response will do justice to quite how rotten this game is, however, because Back to the Multiverse offends independently of the show. For the record, I quite like Seth McFarlane, despite his many detractors, and I am capable of enjoying Family Guy. Yeah, I know, I'm a terrible person for that.

But if you think the SHOW's bad, the game is like that time we did a wacky activity with an obscure eighties personality!"

"Any "original" writing found within the game is offensive, and not in the usual Family Guy way. At least on the show, there's a sense the writers were aiming to be funny. Not so in Back to the Multiverse. Nary does a level go by without something being called "gay" or "queer." There's no actual gag to that -- it's just someone calling something gay, and we're meant to laugh"

Typical Seth, really. He pretends to be a level-headed, compassionate, proponent of something one minute, and then makes foul attacks on that same group and others the next. He is a pitiful hypocrite. And he clearly uses the character Brian to spew his condescending views.

I stopped reading at "Jim Sterling writes".

bubblebeam4173d ago

I stopped reading after Jim- in the event they were speaking of some fat-ass.

I saw the score... I guessed Streling... looked down and saw his name... then proceeded to puke. I know the game probably sucks, but Jim is the biggest (literally and figuratively) troll in gaming "journalism". There are people who kiss his butt and act like he's the best thing around, but in reality, he is nothing but an attention whore that got picked on as a kid and wants to feel empowered.

coolbeans4173d ago

You should have stopped reading at "Family Guy. . ."

Locksus4173d ago

In my opinion, Jim Sterling writes some pretty damn well written and funny articles. Sure, he is a harsh critic but sometimes for a good reason. Now, I haven't played this game so I can't say much about the quality of the game but the game might really be bad, who knows? It's his opinion, after all.

If you're interested in the game and you like the look of it, give it a go. I never buy games based on a review someone else gives it. I'll judge it myself and you guys should too.

I like Jim Sterling's reviews. I don't always agree, but he is pretty distinct. People are still hurting over that ACII review, and really who cares?

shammgod4173d ago

He even says he doesn't like the show. Probably not the right person you want reviewing for a subjective opinion.

JohnApocalypse4173d ago

He said that its not the show's fault that this game is bad

SilentNegotiator4173d ago (Edited 4173d ago )

"I am capable of enjoying Family Guy. Yeah, I know, I'm a terrible person for that"

He said that people will CLAIM he isn't a fan. Try reading the review next time.

Besides, like he said, they crap out lines out of context. You can easily be a fan of the show and not find that funny longer than 3 seconds. And there's no cleverness or humor to the offensive stuff, unlike the show.

Humor wouldn't save a game that uses absolutely the most basic, crap gameplay possible.

99% of these cartoon based games are just quick cash grabs

Dovahkiin4173d ago (Edited 4173d ago )

Let's hope Obsidian's South Park RPG breaks that trend.

bubblebeam4172d ago

@Dovahkiin

I really hope so. The amount of trashy south park games I have played is depressing. Sadly, the tower defence one has been the best, and even then it was average.

The Tenorman's revenge on XBLA was pathetic. Absolutely boring and lazy development. Fingers crossed stick of truth is good. Though my hopes are about as low as they can get.

Jinkies4173d ago

"Just like the show"

Oh please, it's declined in quality sure but it's still entertaining to watch. I don't see people complain about The Simpson despite not being funny since the 90s.

JohnApocalypse4173d ago

Its not really that offensive compared to South Park

WTF is with you avatar?

Jinkies4173d ago

Bit of boobage from Velma

pixelsword4173d ago

No wonder Shaggy always wanted to stay in the van...

HenryFord4173d ago

You don't see people complain about the Simpsons? Have you been to the internet before?

However - despite all the hate the Simpsons get:
I still love them. They are still funny as hell. And they still deserve that reserved spot every monday evening in my time (It's airing somwhere at 4am on Mondays by my local time - so I'll watch it after work. Ah - who am I kidding. Generally I have watched it before I go to work)

Pozzle4173d ago

I see more people complaining about new Simpsons than I do about Family Guy, tbh.
