Wii U 'upscales original Wii games' to HD

US Wii U owners are reporting that, contrary to claims from Nintendo, the newly released console upscales original Wii games to be displayed in HD resolution.

The functionality was noted by a NeoGAF user, who points out that while Wii games aren't displayed in native 1080p, they are cleaned up and noticeably sharper when played on the Wii U. (Wii U)

to make wii games look worse on the wii u?

thats not what i can call a "nice" surprise...
linkratos  +   184d ago
...they undeniably look better
mcstorm  +   184d ago
@DivineAssault I think this is agood thing. I sold my Wii 2 years ago as I had to many games to get through on the other consoles and the wii got used the least esp when I got Kinect but I have missed out on some Wii games sine then so this is nice to have to play them.

Only a week and a half to go and I get mine.

your tv says 1080p but the game is still running in 480p.

if somehow anyone makes a console that can upscale a game to 702p or 1080p right out of the box than we wouldn't need more HD collections lol.

is it even possible to make a system that can automatically upscale? within a reasonable price point?

hopefully sony or ms will look into it

Yeah, I've still got Sin and Punishment II, Mario Kart and Red Steel II (3 of the best wii games, Imho..) so that's great news!

IGN just released a similar article, showing off Zelda, it actually looks worse on the WiiU, not sure if the video is real proof, or if someone is trying to bring down the WiiU.
stragomccloud  +   185d ago
Doesn't really look worse. But it also doesn't look even remotely better. At least it's HDMI though.

The wiiU can do alot, even old games in 1080p
Schawk  +   185d ago
As long as it plays games like black ops 2 and aliens colonial marines and all the rest of the good stuff better than the ps3 and 360 and reports are that it does im happy with my pre order knowing i have the best console as of right now.

Reason being i sold ps3 and 360 machines a while back to fund a pc, so with the wii u filling the gap now im happy with what i see from gameplay and players commentary.

I Have so many Wii games to catch up on. So glad with my Wii U purchase.
stragomccloud  +   185d ago
If you're new to Wii games try to check out a relatively unknown title called "Fragile Dreams."
wishingW3L  +   185d ago
I think the ones that will benefit the most by owning a Wii U are those that skipped on the Wii. Because now you'll have a huge library to explore without having to wait for more games to be released on the Wii U.

Xenoblade, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Zelda SS, Mario Galaxy, etc.

lol i was like it's 1080P MAN know your HD
stragomccloud  +   185d ago
To bad it's only upscaled rather than upconverted. It'd be sweet to see Wii games upconverted. Those screens of Wii games running on the dolphin emulator are really great!

You do know...upscaled and upconverted is the same thing right?
Dolphin runs in native resolutions, whatever you set it at. It's not upscaling anything.
stragomccloud  +   185d ago
Indeed. But the process is different. Dolphin will re render at a higher resolution.
Kennytaur  +   185d ago
So it just outputs it at a higher resolution? I'm guessing it wont look any better than on a Wii using Component then. If it had actually rendered it in HD, I would be impressed.
wishingW3L  +   185d ago
well, the fact that the image will go through an HDMI which is a completely digital cable should make the games look much more cleaner than component cables.

I think "much more" is stretching it.

From watching the Zelda comparison video (and this is JUST my uninformed opinion based off a Youtube video), there was a little less aliasing but the colours weren't quite as well contrasted... Nothing significantly different though.
Thepcz  +   185d ago
expect vast improvement in video quality
some people cant tell the difference with video quality.

i remember i went into a game shop to buy an RGB cable for my wii (before i had a tv with a component input) and the guy told me the RGB cable would give me absolutely no upgrade in visual quality over the standard cable. I told him it would- i used RGB cables on every computer since dreamcast, and the quality at the time was the best you could get.

Anyway, got home, and low and behold, the rgb did vastly improve the wii video quality.

the same will be true of using wii games through a hdmi output. hdmi is superior to the componant output of the original wii, so the image quality will be better. the colour will be cleaner, less noise. Plus, the image will be upscaled.

its a win win situation, i dont know why anyone other than an idiot, or troll would say otherwise

:D

HDMI gives a sharper image but it also has less color depth than component.
Main_Street_Saint  +   185d ago
So I should stick with component cables than?
Qrphe  +   185d ago
@Main

If you value slightly better color depth over a more crisp image so much then yes.
