The Wii U will be fine, even post PS4, Xbox 720 Launch

By Furious Francis, editor-in-chief of Playeressence.com

Leading up to the Wii U's launch, and even post launch, there has been some concern with a number of gamers, that the Wii U will not have the graphical power to compete with the next systems from Sony and Microsoft. While the PS4 and Xbox 720 will have better graphics than the Wii U, don't expect the gap we saw this generation. Some of the biggest concerns or complaints I've heard with the Wii U are: Its graphics for the long term, the 'gimmicky' gamepad, and launch game selection. Not only will the Wii U be just fine, but I'll also address all of the major concerns I've seen from gamers online. (Microsoft, Next-Gen, Nintendo, PS3, Sony Computer Entertainment, Wii U, Xbox 360)

Next gen, I'm purchasing every console so I won't miss a great gaming experience... EVER.

I can't believe it's been 6 years since the PS3 been released. WOW time fly's.

Nintendo knew:

Console gamers... Dont care about graphics.

They were successful the last time with an under powered system by offering gimmicks, history will just repeat itself. The majority of the console demographic is happy with the Wii U.

@decrypt, I care about graphics. If I didn't I would still be playing C64 or NES. And most people care about graphics, otherwise there wouldn't be need for next gen consoles. Ever.

The Wii U will have a 10m sales head start on SONY and MS, which will be good for business (in terms of 3rd party support, at least!). However, I'm not sure consumers will buy into tablet gaming like they did with motion controls. Time will tell I guess...

I agree, the Wii U will be successful for a long time.

Zelda, Smash Bros, Mario, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Pokemon, in HD.... enough said. The Wii U is going to do just fine. Just as long Nintendo releases these games.

I would love a real Pokemon RPG with online functionality on the Wii U. That is my all time anticipated game for every Nintendo home console. I'm sure it will come.

nope...1)get massive games library 1st/3rd party dev. 2)best nintendo network capability...then wii u will fine. in my opinion wii u is "hybrid console"(wii+ps3/x360port games+1st party HD games+Indie dev.games)possibility wii U could get down port from next gen console...it's ok because it's mean wii u will get "massive library" ^^

The Wii U will be fine, yeah, like the Vita.
Sgt_Slaughter  +   701d ago
The Vita is not dead. It will survive and in 3 months it will start to pick up steam... I hope.
tehpees3  +   701d ago
I agree. There are too many factors playing against this theory that Wii U will be irrelevant by the time the others come out. Consumers are not driven by power. They are driven by games.
Godchild1020  +   701d ago
Do you think maybe Nintendo released a console with less power than expected from the next Xbox and Playstation because of the chances the development cost will go up?

Just like this gen; Nintendo Wii games are 50 dollars and PS3/360 games are 60. If true, cost might go up to 70 while Nintendo Wii U games will still be priced at 60?

Only time will tell.

Game development costs have already capped out. Artists are already creating assets at insane qualities (the engine/pipeline then lowers the quality as needed for the game), or are capable of it and actually have to work harder to make them optimal.
Programmers are already capable of implementing the highest quality effects and other graphics, but they have to spend a lot of time making them work on current gen hardware (near the end of the next gen it will revert to 30fps slugfest though, as marketing teams inevitably push for better screenshot graphics again)

In short, man-hours for game development will actually reduce next gen because of the increase in power - but it varies vastly more depending on the game itself. However, if the nextbox and PS4 have top of the range hardware they will be selling for a huge loss (otherwise they will be the most expensive launch consoles of all time and cost more than a mid range gaming PC), this could mean the games have to cost more to make up that lost money for the platform (this is why PC games are usually cheaper).

i agree. epic games mentioned the high dev cost for next-gen games. which means when ps4/xbox720 comes out, expect games to be at $70-$80. with the wii u, obviously a little less powerful than those 2, games will most likely retain their $60 tag. not to mention wii u will still be the least expensive hardware.

ps4 and xbox720 are rumored to be targeting $400, and will only be slightly more powerful than the Wii U.

good to see a positive article rather than the doom and gloom ones.

the wii-u will be fine. if theres one thing we can learn from this gen is that sony, microsoft and nintendo will do what it takes to stay on top of the game.

from all the doomed ps3 articles we had, id say they were all rubbish by looking how strong the ps3 has done since then.
bozebo  +   701d ago
Give us a Pokémon MMO, Nintendo.
Schawk  +   701d ago
@ bozebo , you are correct my friend.
Anybody can stick allot of power inside a box its called a PC and they can do it at a cheaper price than it ever has been with the price of electronics now compared to 5 years ago.

I myself am very interested to see what sony do and ofcourse microsoft, but i think the gamepad is gonna be what keeps the wiiU apart from the rest, that and the headstart it will have, unless Sony and MS do there own tablet,

but then thats even more ££ on top of what powerfull components people also want, so £££? will this be acceptable in todays economy with companys taking a real hit over the last couple of years

Could this be another case were Nintendo dupe Sony and MS into the tablet battle like they did with motion

Anyone that thinks otherwise underestimates the experience of Nintendo.
They've risen and fallen in the most extreme ways. Nintendo has one thing going for it that their competitors lack: software. There's no denying they're in this for the long haul, and if one tradition rings true, it's that Nintendo stands out among the rest. Expect "most" gamers to possess reluctant enthusiasm for Wii U simply because it's "not adult oriented". The mistake in this thinking, is the truth that "everyone" likes to play games. Hence the slow moving innovations and similarites of the entertainment counterparts of Sony and MS.
Sony banked on the "Playstation" brand which has served them well until a few years ago. "Move" has been a bit dormant in the minds of the Sony fans and Vita is disappointing to say the least. If they go all out on Ps4 like they did with the predecessor, I fear for their future participation in the industry.

MS seems to have found their groove. I question their leadership in regards to what they will contribute to the gaming world, besides online multi-player. Yet they seem to be in a commanding position.

I intend to advocate for as much competition as possible.

Sony and Microsoft has just as good software Imo Sony has the best 1st party out of the 3 followed my Microsoft then Nintendo Sony has the appeal to every type of gamer and genre they take risks Sony recoup and Microsoft recoup there money in many way not just games so they could invest more hardware than Nintendo and I find that ironic Sony and Microsoft will watch each other if 720 has beefy specs like 8gb of ram you think Sony won't follow suit and vice versa they have the first party to push the tech Sony and Microsoft's online infatsructure is leagues beyond ninety everything you guys are going through has been ironed out ages ago on ps360 bandits million of gamers on psnlive that's purchased so much software that if ps360 is comparable with that millions who will purchase on that premise alone

All this needs is a price drop post real next gens release and this will fly off shelves. right?
coolman229  +   700d ago
No doubt the Wii U will have a price cut by the time the next Playstation and XBox come out. It certainly doesn't need it, but it will happen.
Npugz7  +   701d ago
Actually there will be a big difference in terms of graphics of the wiiu to ps4 and 720! A Wiiu was gutted yesterday on the internet to dig into the power of the wiiu and found that its on par with the PS3!
