Well at least the NAMCO TALES games are known for their rather good story. Final Fantasy has had rather good story, but with FFXIII the linearity was my Biggest complaint.

There have certainly been some pretty great storytelling experiences in games, but video games are still evolving as a narrative vessel. I believe the best is yet to come.

Look at film. Sure, you had guys like Hitchcock in the earlier days, but Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Ridley Scott, and David Lynch didn't really get their start until the 1970's – almost 100 years after the invention of film, and 50 years after the birth of Hollywood. Video games are still hitting their stride.
