GamesBeat: New Super Mario Bros. U is far from new (review)

Judged in a universe where no other Mario games exist, New Super Mario Bros. U would easily be a triumph. As-is, it feels like a smaller effort, a checklist completed with recycled items. Nintendo fans will enjoy Mario U immensely, and they should. This game carries the standard proudly, offering all the smart level design, split-second escapes, and tight gameplay that creates (and deserves) such devotion. But it’s not a system seller, and it lacks inspiration.

I really want to play this in HD. Damn you, Nintendo.

dedicatedtogamers4178d ago

It looks like a good Mario, but not a great Mario. NSMBWii was a fresh experience because they introduced 4-player play, but the stuff they're adding to NSMBU is lame. I wish they would just make a massive, challenging, secret-filled Mario game instead of focusing on gimmicks.

Why can't CoD get this same treatment?

Blastoise4179d ago

Because CoD has been big for about 5 years. Where as Mario has had 2D platformers since 1985...

SybaRat4178d ago

And CoD at least creates new characters, has a different (if generic) plot, and different environments/guns/etc. Though it is still pretty samey.

WiiUalpha4178d ago

From 2006 to 2012
COD MW
CODWAW
COD MW2
COD BO
COD BO 2
COD MW3

vs
From 1981 to 2012
SMB
SMB2
SMB3
Mario World
N64 Mario
GC Mario
SMG
SMG2
NSMBWii
NSMBWii U

IN a 3rd of the time they have released almost half as many COD as Nintendo has Mario platformers...

Sybabat, It's hard to take you seriously as a Mario player when you claim they havent added any new environments yet they clearly have in every Mario game so far.

SybaRat4178d ago

Still sounds good...just not gonna be Galaxy.

Goodbye New Mario, I Won't Miss You

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first Mario 2D game in almost two decades without the New Super Mario art style, and it looks all the better for it

Am I missing something? It looks exactly the same, just higher resolution… Is this sarcasm?

specialguest304d ago

Yes, you're not observant if you think it looks exactly the same. It immediately appeared different to me from the start. Mario's 3D model will always be the same, so not much difference there. However, the animation they've given the Super Mario Wonder makes it look more like a CGI Mario animation where as the New Mario Bros game looks more like typical video game animation movements

@specialguest Yeah those animations are insane.

FinalFantasyFanatic304d ago

You really didn't notice the difference? It's really obvious, I was surprised when I first saw the trailer.

"Am I missing something?"

Your glasses maybe?

Juancho51304d ago

This Mario game looks great, getting a switch for this and Mario RPG. CANT WAIT, TITS JACKED.

Profchaos304d ago

Yeah I liked how much more emotion could be conveyed through the new style at first glance I didn't see much difference but then rewatching the trailer I'm seeing more and more animations that remind me of the Mario artwork from the manual of smb3

Outlawzz303d ago

I hated the new super Mario bros Style. This new one seems a lot more expressive and less generic. I hope it's a good game

shinoff2183303d ago

I prefer the 2d Mario's. Me and my girl have played them all together and mario galaxy , Mario odyssey. The 2nd player option is extremely eh
