Xbox Live Turns 10: Reflecting On An Online Revolution

GI.biz chats with members of the original Xbox team and Bungie in this special look back at the origins of a service that forever changed console gaming.

“I think Xbox Live wouldn't have made it,” said Bungie's test manager in the run up to Halo 2's launch, Harold Ryan, now Bungie's president. “I don't think the Xbox would be where it is today without Bungie and without Halo. As a group, we provided both technical and creative guidance and thought leadership that really pushed the limits. We weren't just a game developer using the service. We were integrated in the design of the service and how it worked. Systems for groups and matchmaking and skill ranking were all things that were pushed the furthest and the hardest by us.” (Industry, Microsoft, Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox LIVE)

In before "OMG! PSN is free, noobz MS.."

Congrats Xbox on 10 years of a great service and hopefully many more to come.
I have to admit 10 years ago I always thought basic multi-player would be free forever. And I thought it would be mostly used for gaming online.

MS surprised the sh!t of me.

So this means what ever xbox 720 cost it will really be $50 more..
Doesn't matter I guess since it makes them millions. so more power to them good business move MS.

Now call me a lying troll?

It is a very good businesses move by ms but it offers the best online experience on any console because the 360 was built around live.

The ps3 and wii just had online added to them and are not as easy to use as the 360.

Im happy to pay £40 a year to play online and access apps on the xbox as its services work best for me but other people will pick psn over live because its free and that is the good thing about having choice.

well as long as there is choice which is good as long as one of those choices continue offer greater online support than it will always be woth the subscription. then again ps plus does have its advantages, not XBL's uhhh quality but they do have quantity on their side.

Been a long time of gaming these past ten years. I can't wait to see what comes the next ten.
