El33tonline Editorial: A tour of SmartGlass and its exciting new features

Pieter at El33tonline writes:

"Ever since the announcement at E3 2012, I’ve been super excited about Xbox SmartGlass (XSG). The whole idea behind the application excited me. It’s not just an app to show you your stats and your friends - it is way more than that. Let me take you on a tour and show you what XSG is all about." (Mobile, SmartGlass, Xbox 360)

wow, the features listed in this article are nothing to jump up and down about. I have installed Smart Glass on both my iPad and my Galaxy S3. While being able to use the phone screen to navigate around the dashboard is faster, it's nothing to write home about. I will admit that the ability to type on the Smart Glass App is a life saver, as typing with the controller is cumbersome and I usually resort to voice messaging since it's quicker and easier.

The ability to look at achievements and edit your Avatar are just fluff features imho. Sure they are there, but it's hardly important stuff.

All in all, it's a nice little app to fool around with. As more games come out that support it, I am sure we may see some other cool features get revealed, but right now it's just a simple app with a few good uses.

I thought iOS support was still "planned for the future" according to wikipedia. :/

Anyway, the grab of Smart Glass isn't the way it integrates with games but rather the way it let's you control your Xbox with a touch screen device easily. The point is to eliminate Media Remotes, Wireless Keyboards and other such hardware accessories that add functionality your Xbox, eg, comfortably browsing the net through Internet Explorer or watching films.

It costs both the manufacturer and the consumer a lot of money for hardware peripherals that add such functionality and that more often than not can only be used in one context and therefore have a finite lifespan.

The integration of XSG into games is a bonus to make it more attractive in more ways, but it's not the core function. It already performs it's core function which is to conveniently let you or anyone else in your household take control of your Xbox and make practical use of it without having to buy an exclusive piece of hardware. In that regard, it's quite a brilliant app that achieves a complex goal in a way far simpler than any other attempt before it.

Actual users disagree, they think it is great as evident by the review score giving a 4.3 out of 5 stars.

I like having this app one my phone, especially when I'm playing Forza and want to quickly navigate through menu stuff.

It just came out, I'm sure they'll integrate it with more stuff soon.
