If Everything’s a Call of Duty Clone, Why Can’t Anyone Outdo Call of Duty?

Kotaku - Whenever a military-themed shooter comes out, the first thing many people say is "oh great, here comes another Call of Duty clone". It's a term used as a slur against a game, saying that it's not just copying another game, it's copying another game that for many has long run out of ideas.

Why, then, is it so hard for people who are copying Call of Duty to actually pull it off and do just as good, if not better, than Call of Duty? (Call of Duty, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

its called marketing. a company that owns CoD, Diablo, Starcraft, World of Warcraft which are some of the most powerful brands in the world. where do you expect these companies to get the type of revenue that Activsion/Blzzard gets to market their games. i'll give you an example, as we all know that the internet is the most popular form of entertainment these days, everyone is connected to internet. i go to youtube fairly often, every channel that has the ability to display ads was showing nothing but the CoD trailer hell even right they are still showing the ads. i go to watch tv and every channel i watch there is a CoD trailer showing during the commercial breaks. it all has to do with marketing, look at homefront for instance that game sold 3 million. you think that game would have sold that much if THQ did not push a heavy marketing campaign? NO.

Plenty of FPSs(ones that aren't clones...) have out done CoD from a gaming stand point. It's just that they don't out do CoD in sales.

As for the actual clones... Nobody wants a knockoff. Why play the clone when you can play the original? People that want CoD buy CoD, plain and simple. Nobody looks for a game that isn't CoD, but plays like CoD because that doesn't make any sense. Save yourself the trouble and buy the actual game titled CoD.

Has nothing to do with marketing. We're talking about a great game, marketing doesn't make a great game, the developers do.

Cause to be better then cod you have to innovate and that's something we don't see in the industry much anymore :/ the only games that seem to innovate are genres that are not multiplayer like bioshock games or exclusives like gears of war 3 and killzone 2 both of which had great multiplayer and could have been bigger then cod if they were multiplatform.
Yomaster  +   653d ago
Are you actually implying that CoD innovates, or are you saying that everything else that doesn't innovate just like CoD loses attention because it falls short? I honestly haven't seen CoD innovate since CoD4 was released.
vishant101  +   653d ago
Im implying that people will play something familiar until something better comes along. since everything trys to be like call of duty people call it a cod clone and just play the main stream version which is cod. To beat cod you need something different.

I don't necessarily agree that every game tries to be like Call of Duty, as CoD actually borrows most of its features from games that existed long before it, but I can see where you're coming from.

One day it will happen. Just not today. However a lot of people now prefer battlefield.
FunAndGun  +   653d ago
yeah, it does seem like Battlefield 3 has chipped away at the CoD audience.

It will be interesting to see the first week sales of BF4.

Far Cry 3 is coming out in less than a month.

Its already been out done by a lot of franchises/games just not in the sales department.

its called FANBOY CoD REVIEW SITES (IGN, KOTAKU, ETC)... any other game that even REMOTELY resembles CoD (Homefront, MoHWF, BF3 Close Quarters DLC) is bashed and talked down by these CoD fanboy sites... not that they are bad games, but the fanboy sites instantly start them off with a mediocre score and then drop with every reference of CoD in their reviews. But they love and praise ANYTHING and EVERYTHING CoD, regardless of how garbage or how repetitive the particular CoD game is for that year...

article = idiocracy

Why can't anyone outdo Call of Duty? It's already been done.

Far Cry, Crysis, Halo, Killzone, Counter-Strike, Battlefield, and these are just a few games in the FPS genre that are vastly more innovative than CoD. Let's not forget that the FPS genre existed long before CoD became popular.

How about Gears of War, Metal Gear Solid, Bioshock, Uncharted, and any other game known for it's innovation in terms of gameplay and storyline?

Does everyone forget about these games just because they don't come out every year? Just because CoD sells millions doesn't mean it's of any higher quality than the far more worthy AAA titles that are forgotten due to the vast majority of laymen in society and their inability to recognize the fact that CoD is utter garbage and doesn't deserve either the attention, $60 price tag, or the ridiculous amount of sales it receives any more.

And before any troll comes around spewing about how "it sells millions, it MUST be a great game," each of Justin Bieber's albums have gone triple-platinum and have hit #1 on the charts in multiple countries, does that automatically make him the greatest artist in the world?

But that's really all they've got: the game's sales. From game to game, there isn't the improvement on ANY level that other FPS or even TPS show. There's simply an increase in sales to tout.

Exactly because everything is a copy of COD. When COD 4 was announced it was a new idea that caused excitement among gamers. While there were other shooters, they tried something new, specially with MP and it worked.

Whenever some game outdoes COD, is going to be because they took the risk to do something innovative and DIFFERENT from anything that is out till that day. Specially completely different than COD.

@mezzo

why do you keep on bringing kotaku's garbage on N4G?
i don't see any positive or productive contribution they make to gaming with their articles.
