Considering the success of Nintendo’s unique hardware, and the general competitiveness of today’s market, is it time Sony and Microsoft became a little more daring in the design of their consoles?
Good lord that's a silly question. Of course a product sold at stores for consumers needs a selling point or "gimmick". Those aren't bad things or bad terms.
What is meant is some sort of major "gimmick" as you said. I'm talking about the equivalent to the Wiimote for the Wii for example... not something comparatively minor like linux support and "it plays blu-rays" (PS3 at launch)
I don't think Linux support would sell anyone an extra console personally, but that's a bit off topic. Blu-Ray support and a new controller are both "gimmicks" and hooks to draw in the consumer. Just because some might view one of them more negatively doesn't mean they aren't both "gimmicks". A gimmick is a unique characterstic of a product that makes it stand out. All products have them, and should always have them. The more universal, like-able and attention grabbing your gimmick is the better.
All I want in my next box is awesome games. PS4 should suffice for awhile.
@Andre blu-ray a gimmick,you don't need 5 DVD to play one game,just one ole blu-ray.
Personally I think there will be some unique selling point ans both consoles will take different roads. Last time around it was primarily about games and a pad. Expect something completely different next gen.
In my opinion there's no need for next gen consoles anytime soon...
All I know is unless they drop support completely for the ps3, I don't see me diving into any game on the ps4, especially if it comes out on the ps3 too. I'm perfectly fine with this gens gaming. I need something more than cross game chat to make me buy one.
Yes, i think for sony ( sorry my favorite console company) need to make games like beyond two souls, heavy rain , uncharted, the last of us. Furthermore, i hope sony or another company please releases something with on demand video/gaming.
I just want games! Could not careless about all the other crap like Netfilx, Hulu etc etc..
If they both have good exclusive games along with some cool bells and whistles but mainly exclusive ip's ready to go at launch then they will sell well.
No gimmicks! Just great exclusives, and beefed up hardware to support better physics, AI, lighting etc. Better graphics is a plus. No gimmick controllers or glasses please.
yes they will have USP. 720: Ultimate Media box+ New Shiny Graphics+ New Halo box+ ($499) ps4: Extremely powerful box shown off by tons of exclusive/1st party titles + diverse control options move/vita/mayb a kinect-like Playstation eye ($599) Sony will try to be the ultimate media box but will fail
"Sony will try to be the ultimate media box but will fail" Right now Sony is doing fine on being a media box with many users using netflix is a fine example. Also they upgraded their store recently. SONY will try to be mainly a ultimate gaming console and succeed?
By fail I mean the xbox will undoubtably out do them that field. No one will be enticed by the ps4 media options, although they will be there. I think microsoft will actually go far enough in that field to make it a "USP", not just a feature.
@Tei77 I do not see if the next generation of Xbox that it will be the ultimate media box without it abandoning what is core to the Xbox name, and that's that it's primarily a gaming console. It'll put other forms of media before games.
Every sale has a gimmick I don't think its necessary for the nextbox/ps4 but to reach the masses they will more than likely want to separate themselves from the competition
games will be the selling point of ps4 for me.
Not spending over $400..no matter how much they promise. Not going to happen! lol
Where do they come up with these concept designs for the ps4? Ergonomics heh! Whats that?
