Former Square Enix boss calls merger ‘a complete failure’

Former Square Enix president Hisashi Suzuki has suddenly become very vocal about the state of his old company, taking to Twitter by calling the merger that took place in 2003 “a complete failure.”

In a series of posts, Suzuki, who commanded Square from 2000 to 2005, stated that the overall worth of the company has still not been able to surpass that of Square’s original value before the merger actually happened. Suzuzki cites higher development costs as a key contributor to the increasing deficit. Being as blunt as possible on an internet medium, he said that the company has “no vision for the future.”

I believe that he is absolutely correct.

Ever since the merger, we the consumer have been delivered mild watered down gaming experiences when compared to what we played in the past. Back when we got legendary memorable titles that can stand the test of time. Titles that set the bar to such a height that newer offerings from just about anyone have a difficult time reaching. Games like Final Fantasy up until 10, and many many others before the merger.

I hope all the time that Square would do what's necessary to return to their old ways of doing business. Today they have created a mediocre Final Fantasy experience that not many appreciate, and have turned it into a resource depleting trilogy instead of giving the people what they asked for.

I think SE started going downhill right after FF10.

Anyone else?

Simon_Brezhnev1353d ago

I think you just want people to see an article you posted by putting up that image. LOL

majiebeast1353d ago

Wow you really had to use such a picture your a pretty sad individual.

blitz06231353d ago

You mean SQUARE started going downhill since SE did not make FFX. The merger happened after FFX was released. Their first FF game was X-2. IMO their best and probably only good game(s) is the KH series.

Yeah, the image is why I didn't click. I came specifically to see if anyone in the comments here felt like the image was a bit much. No politics in gaming please. Unless its gamer politics.

Chrono1353d ago

Let me remind you that FF11 was Squaresoft's doing, before the merger. The merger wasn't the problem, it is Yoichi Wada who ruined it. Since he became the president of Squaresoft, he changed many things. In fact, he literally said it several times that he doesn't want Final Fantasy games to be the same as the old ones.

don't agree with you much but i can agree with this post

I think this is your first post I've seen that didn't reek of "praise overload."

Da One1353d ago

I blame leadership and a lack of knowing what customers want, along with lengthy and high cost development.

Reibooi1353d ago

I think he is 100% right that the merger was a failure but that isn't to say SE hasn't made some great games since said merger. For example my personal favorite Final Fantasy happened after the merger(Final Fantasy XII) not to mention some of the incredible handheld games SE has put out like The World Ends With You, Dissidia, Crisis Core and the like.

The problem is that as of late they have been trying to hard to appeal to the western market instead of just making the games that they used to the way they want. If you try to make something that isn't what you want to make it won't turn out well. XIII is a good example of this. It had no direction and you can tell.

A large part of the problem in my opinion is Wada. He has no idea what the hell he is doing and someone needs to replace him. Anyone would be better honestly.

Griffin48711353d ago

It was after FFX, ironically that's when they scrapped multi-character turn-based play. Then it keep getting more watered down with linear exploration and weak story elements.

If they screw XV up, I dunno what to think. FF will sell, always, and any kind of greed can be made outta that.

Shouldn't the picture show Mitt Romney instead ? He's the loser, or ?

@ topic
Square Enix isn't doomed: FF13 sold well & they still have western games like Tomb Raider or Hitman.

Veni Vidi Vici1353d ago

The picture shouldn't have been permitted. This is a gaming site not a f'in political forum. Most of the people on this site probably can't even vote so that's even more reason to get rid of the politics.

Change the picture or get rid of the story completely.

I wish I could agree with you multiple times but sadly I can only do it once...so I'll give you bubbles as well
