A Halo Apologia: ODST and a Break from the Formula

1up - Why the most unpopular Halo game might be the best one.

EVILDEAD3604174d ago (Edited 4174d ago )

Game wasn't unpopular..period

1up is running out of stories. I said it was one of the best campaigns ever when it was released back then. i was far from the only one.

I wasn't the only one.

I loved ODST. Every Halo fan has a huge affinity for the Chief but that doesn't mean as fans we can't enjoy the games that do not feature Master Chief. I love the Halo Universe and the Halo lore. I've enjoyed every one of the Halo games.

It may sound impossible, but ODST is the first Halo I played through all the way. I loved it and couldn't understand why it was less popular than the rest. Not unpopular, just... less.

Because it was experimental and was never developed or marketed as a full campaign. That's why people that treated it like a full campaign were disappointed and people that treated it like a unique expansion found it awesome.

It was lost somewhere in the middle, the price was was regular $60, but the multiplayer was just halo 3, the graphics were the same as halo 3, and there was no label to differentiate it as a separate game.

There's no way to even explain it properly... which explains a lot.

It was my first Halo campaign also. It made me fall in love with the series. Very wonderful game with amazing music, a good story, and a very metroid primy vibe with the visor and empty city to explore. The Halo games (ive only played reach and odst) have perfect shooting, some of the richest lore ever, some of the best music period, but the stories kind of let me down. I guess its the way its told really. ODST had a nice way of finding the equipment and flashing back to see what went down. Reach had one of the best ending ever made but the story felt anticlimactic other than that. Its my only gripe of the series. The lore and universe deserves Mass Effect style story although the presentation is prob the highest in the industry.

It was unpopular in that it didn't sell like other Halo titles, and it was a bit controversial at it's launch because of a short campaign and no new multiplayer besides firefight. Technically, Halo Wars would be the most unpopular Halo game though, had least amount of sales, CE: Anniversary doesn't count since it's just a remake.

I liked it, I wont say i loved it.
The story line . Even tho it had the Quinten Terrentino effect all over it and was in every place but center. It was decent.
Theres a few gameplay elements that were missing from the game
and gameplay elements that should have already been in other halo games.
and i wont lable it as an expansion due to the fact Chief was no where in sight. So it was a complete short game all in its own

Cheif doesn't have to be in it, but if that's how you label an expansion. I just always read "halo" on the box, not "Master Chief: combat evolved"

ODST was unique and fun. I just wish you fel more harmless and it didn't play like a spartan but it was amazing none the less

Main_Street_Saint4174d ago

I though it was a great game but felt the price was a tad bit too high when it first came out; past that, loved a lot of the aspects of the game.

Halo has not failed me yet. I loved all of them. Especially Halo Wars. Damn I want a sequel.
