Dragon Ball Z Budokai HD Collection Review | Trendy Gamers

Namco Bandai’s Dragon Ball Z Budokai HD Collection is the latest in the recent string of HD re-releases of popular PlayStation 2 games. The Budokai series was a hybrid fighting game/tie-in video game that usually rehashed the plot of the Dragon Ball Z/Dragon Ball GT animes, to mixed effect. The games were decent productions and the Budokai HD Collection is more of the same, only in high definition this time around.

wtf? the games are great!

GreenRanger1361d ago

Shouldn't each game in a collection be reviewed and scored seperately?
Should re-releases even be scored again?

doogiebear1361d ago

Yeah re-releases should be scored again. Look at ZOE HD and Silent Hill HD collections. Those games were buggy ports (zoe on ps3 version), so that is why.

Also, even if port is flawless, the games dont always age well. Going down nostalgia avenue may yield different results this time around and you may not find the game as enjoyable as you once did. Some games age well, others don't. The reviewers opinion is his own.

Games should be reviewed objectively, on their own merits. Do ports deserve unique reviews? Yes, but not wholly new reviews.

Only two bits of information are pertinent: have the game mechanics withstood the test of time? (i.e. has the gameplay aged well?). And: how does the port run? This is where optimization/bugs come in.

Beyond that, reviews of the original are perfectly applicable.

@Xof: I clearly mentioned in the review that while I was a fan of the anime way back when, I had never played a Dragon Ball Z game in my life before reviewing the Budokai HD collection. So both games WERE reviewed objectively. I also don't get what you're saying, rereleases deserve reviews ... only not "new" ones? Any review of a rerelease would be, by its nature "new".

Also, if you check Metacritic, my scores hold up in aggragate to the scores both games got the first time around. The only difference is that Budokai 1 got a lower score this time because, as I said in the review, 1) it has not aged well and 2) Budokai 3 basically negates its entire reason for on the disc by being the exact same thing only better.

We did write up thoughts on each game and scored each within the review, but since its a collection we had to weight them together for our final score.

Read the review.

Budokai 1 got a 5.
Budokai 3 got an 8.

The reasons for this were given within.

I was talking about game collections in general, not just this one.

Any way, I wan't to see a DBZ Budokai TENKAICHI hd collection. Those games were not so deep, but they actually played like what DBZ fights look like in the anime's. Played like a cross between Virtual On and DBZ Supersonic Warriors for the GBA (Made by creators of Blaz Blu/Guilty Gear).

Add online multiplayer, HD, Widescreen, and trophies/achievements, and i'm in DBZ heaven!

I wish they added online with these games. I swear I would have gotten it.
