Games will always... have their part to play but we are seeing an increase in convenience these platforms are being asked to provide. The term is called "entertainment" for a reason.
There are many different forms and the more that can be accomplished by a single device the more that device will sell and appeal to the masses.
I agree. Appealing to the hardcore audience only is how companies end up not selling units.
Well I wouldn't say more important yet I would say just as important. If I can watch movies and surf the web I find that just as important as playing the games.
These aren't dedicated gaming consoles anymore and they won't be anymore just because peoples' need to consume media has increased.
It will still play games it is just that they won't be the vocal point only. No need for alarm.
The Thing about this is that multimedia is already available on the go on mobile devices and it has always been available on PC for the last 10 years.
There is no point rushing to implement all these non gaming features on a gaming machine to despertately try to keep it relevant to the average western family.
Customers are wanting more in one box, why have multiple things connected to your TV when you can have a Swiss army knife of a console? The PS3 and Xbox 360 are already good examples of this but the games are the stand out feature for now.
Yeah I agree completely, you know, core gaming only created the entire industry. All those core gamers just disappeared and no longer play anything...
The system that focuses on the core next gen WILL WIN...hands down. Casual focus is unsustainable (as proven by the Wii's abysmal third party software sales).
And neither is core focus. Console-manufacturers are not spending billions of dollars in R & D and hardware-manufacturing costs so they can sell their consoles to a few million die-hards. Besides, the core crowd is just not that big nor was it ever really.
Bottom line, casuals don't spend anywhere near the money that the core does nor do they have the loyalty.
This is not an opinion, it is a fact proven by the financial failure of social gaming on both Facebook and the Wii. Thing i'm wrong, go buy some Zynga stock...
Sure, some mobile / social games like Angry Birds will get "super-hype" to fuel massive sales. It's irrelevant and not a reflection of the respective market as a whole.

Features need a lot of work on nextgen consoles.
Focus on the games - If theres no good games, then theres to reason to buy it.
I mean a WEB BROWSER on a console really?
Thats what a PC is useful for, or a laptop, or an iPhone.
Stick to games.
