Disney to buy Hasbro, 'Magic: The Gathering' movie and theme park on its way?

"Magic: The Gathering" and Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro since 1999, might find themselves under new ownership by Disney in the middle of next year. After purchasing Lucasfilm last week for almost $4 billion, a rumor has surfaced today that Disney might also acquire Hasbro. (iPad, Magic the Gathering Online, Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 Expansion, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

Hard to tell
Is this rumor true? Rumor votes 13

Who has control of the Star Wars action figures now? Disney?

@ BitbyDeath
They just make the licensed action figures. Either Lucas or Disney owns the IP. I don't know what the Disney deal included... I know movies, but does it include merch? 4 billions doesn't seem like very much for a 33 bullion dollar franchise. The movies have turned 8 billion in theaters and DVD, merchandise has turned much, MUCH more. (see attached pic) That's why I ask.

Pic won't attach... here's link

Hasbro has control of the action figures.

The Deal with Disney gives them all rights to every IP Lucas owned and that includes the merchandising rights as well. Merchandising is actually one of the things they talked when discussing areas star wars could expand.

About the article though I seriously hope it is just a rumor.Disney doesnt need to own every aspect of my childhood.

in soviet russia Hasbro buys Disney

just transformers has over thousands of characters
MultiConsoleGamer  +   715d ago
I wondered if this would happen, although honestly I expected Disney to team with Mattel, who is their traditional toy manufacturing partner.

Holy ****.
Disney already owns everything Marvel and the Star Wars franchise....now Hasbro? That would mean Transformers and My Little Pony are now Disney.
dredgewalker  +   715d ago
Yep they're also planning a cross over cartoon movie with the Transformers and My Little Pony. I saw a preview of the script and the story goes that Megatron can extract energon from the ponies cuteness and so the autobots try to foil his evil plans by defending them.....also there's a musical dance sequence in the film.

Disney could make their own console at this rate.

Exclusive Pokemon, Star Wars, Marvel, Magic, and of course Kingdom Hearts and everything else Disney related.

How would they get Pokemon?
BitbyDeath  +   715d ago
I thought Hasbro owned them but after looking on Wikipedia it seems they were sold in 2005. So yea... scrap the Pokemon part.

r21  +   715d ago
I hope not...wont be able to watch any of the shows online on youtube. Disney is strict with their content being uploaded, Hasbro not so much.

This could be either very good or horrible. Just because Disney buys these things doesn't mean they can make them work for them or make gold. If they have no synergy in the mergers they could very well kill off these businesses. Disney I am sure is not above buying franchises and companies simply to eliminate the competition and increase their size and could very well not care about them at all. Just because you buy something doesn't mean you can use them to your advantage or handle them well. With Disney buying all these things lets cross our fingers and hope they don't ruin them.People are already cheering new Star Wars movies but Disney backing them doesn't have to produce gold. They could very well run the franchise into the ground.

Why is Magic The Gathering the interesting part here ? What about Paramount only really having Hasbro left to turn to since Marvel is now Disney. Like I said, Disney is taking shots and aiming at Paramount. They probably already approached them, got turned down, and now are taking cheap shots.

Disney already works closely with Mattel so I don't see why this would entirely happen though. I would assume they'd go after Mattel first? Create some assets out of that? Then just negotiate Hasbro Star Wars over to them?

The only thing I can come to conclusion is Disney wants rights to Gi Joe, Transformers, and so on. Either to take shots at Dreamworks or Paramount.

If they were to buy Hasbro, they would create self competition with Mattel, and under current monopoly laws, they would not be allowed to buy Mattel.

It's a small world after all

I wouldn't mind having Magic go more mainstream. Nobody seems to know what it is or they have only heard of it.

Sony still owns A New Hope, so Disney will have to buy the DVD rights from Sony to own it completely.

Magic is good as it is. It has a strong following of players and the franchise is nowhere near a bad financial situation.
omarzy  +   715d ago
Oh, i know it is doing good. I'm only 19 and Magic was only played by myself and a few others in High school, and even less at my college.

It was a lot bigger with everyone when i was younger. A card game being bigger than Yugioh with younger kids was a big deal lol.

@Omarzy, just in case you didnt know Magic is older than you are. I was palying it at your age and i am 37

Just keep Lauren Faust in control of MLP and I will not mind.
Swiggins  +   715d ago
Lauren hasn't been in control for awhile now, she stepped down as creative director after season 1
Killman  +   715d ago
Just did some research and you are correct. Jayson Thiessen is the current creative director and he did season 2. Apparently he is doing season 3 as well.

Please Disney, do not f*** this up! If they do it that is. I absolutely adore the show and it actually has helped me with my depression. Do not kill the love!
