Microsoft Responds to NPD, Talks Shortage

Following the release of the January NPD video game sales data, Microsoft has once again acknowledged a shortage situation for its Xbox 360, which sold 230K units during the month.

"Our retailers are telling us that Xbox 360 is selling as fast as they can restock, but due to this high demand, Xbox 360 is experiencing temporary shortages. We are working as quickly as we can to replenish inventory," the company said in a statement.

Microsoft also outlined some of the Xbox 360 highlights for its business in the January period:

OMG I just saw Xbox 360's in my Wal mart today hahahahahah what pathtic losers.... and NO they weren't flying off of shelves.

Seriously if it is a SHORTAGE of ONE SKU.... its not like u cant find a 360 on any shelves when the PS3 even outsold it in December. hahahaha.

I know. I was at Best Buy today here and they had two mini-pyramids of future customer service actions.

I can only state what i know off personal experience. At the best buy i work at we have been sold out of premiums and elites for months now. We even starting taking 50$ off the halo edition because to many people were walking out.

Do not take this as a attempt to justify Microsoft as me saying this is a shortage in every store in the country. Just this is the case at my Bestbuy.

I agree, there's loads of 360s at my local Toys R Us.

Typical MS propaganda, lie to make themselves look better than they are.

Microsoft wants to act like Nintendo by stating they have shortages of consoles. But the truth is, Xbox 360 is seen in all stores with plenty of supplies unlike the Wii which accually does have shortages.

Isn't it funny that after more than 2 years on the market, AND with enough supply during the holidays, they magically have "shortages". And what strikes me is that they mention these just days before Sony whoops the NPD charts.

maybe their not really short eh.

A 360 price drop is coming very soon. If Sony is smart they will follow. GTA IV will be out and if the 360 is a lot cheaper then the PS3 that could hurt Sony.

LightningPS33683d ago

They already have cheaper Sku's than PS3.

antoinetm3683d ago

With all the replacements they have to send to RROD victims, i might understand why there are shortages in stores :P

f7ss13683d ago

they'll be ready to respond to that price drop since they just cut the production cost of the ps3 in half and reduced the cell size to 45 nm and shrank the blu ray laser size, they're well ahead of the game

sonarus3683d ago

if 360 truly is supply strained it makes no sense for them to cut the price. Cutting the price will create an increase in demand and if the supply dosent meet the demand in a period with a HOT game like GTA4 coming out on the opposing console what do you think is gonna happen. Do you really think new gamers are going to wait for msoft to get more consoles while their friends are already playing GTA4. Not saying msoft wnt cut price but if they plan too they better stock up as much supply as possible cus demand will be thru the roof that period. Same goes for sony. I hear ps3's are getting scarce as well. Sony needs to come out with a high end model by the time GTA4 is out to take advantage of all types of gamers. anyone who sells out GTA4 season jst missed out on some heavy potential sales

masterg3683d ago

This is absolute bullshit.

Lets say there is no shortage. MS is getting outsold everywhere in the world now, and it's the beginning of the end.

Lets say there is a shortage. MS is the worst hardware company in the world. Halo underperformed big time when it came to moving consoles. MS sold less at Xmas than the year before, so if this is the case they would have to be dumb as hell. And I simply don't believe they are.
